and let’s not forget – Freedom FROM Religion
The treaty of tripoli was ratified by the senate which still had several founding fathers, and was signed by president john adams, another founding father which expressly stated that the united states was NOT founded on the christian religion.
It was very specifically designed as a secular government with no official state religion by design.
Thomas Jefferson:
“Christianity neither is, nor ever was a part of the common law.”
“Christianity nis the most perverted system that ever shone on man.”
“Religions are all alike–founded upon fables and mythologies.”
Thomas Paine:
“Whenever we read the obscene stories, the voluptuos debaucheries, the cruel and torturous executions, the unrelenting vindictiveness with which more than half the Bible is filled, it would be consistent that we called it the word of a demon than the word of God. It has served to corrupt and brutalize mankind.”
James Madison:
“Religion and government will both exist in greater purity the less they are mixed together.”
“The purpose of separation of church and state is so to keep forever from these shores the ceaseless strife that has soaked the soil of Europe with blood for centuries.”
President James Madison vetoed government funds for a church on February 21, 1811. He rejected a bill that would have incorporated the Protestant Episcopal Church in the town of Alexandria (then in the District of Columbia) and granted it government authority to care for the poor and educate children.
