Years ago on a conversation board, someone asked that as a thought experiment: what about making abandoned malls as apartments or condos?
I think the biggest challenge is adding all the plumbing needed for each apartment/condo: the kitchen, 1 or 2 bathrooms, and maybe a laundry room. Even if you figure each store as at least one bathroom, that still is a lot of pipe to put in. Adding more circuits for electricity could be a challenge, too.
But it could be a nice place to live.
