Finn stood and delivered at a point in time many men were running around trying to figure out to do. Many were killed. There are times when individuals rise to the occasion, no matter the personal danger and Finn earned his award.
Yet Doris Miller, and yes, Doris was a man’s name back then, basically did the same thing and was not awarded the Medal of Honor.
I was thinking that more would have gotten the medal of honor and purple hearts (if they were around then)–or should have.
And I also imagine many more also fought as best they could besides Finn and Miller.
The Medal of Honor has been around since the Civil war. The Purple Heart since WWI but it’s predecessor is from George Washington’s time.
He wasn’t even allowed to shoot a weapon before because of his color. But he has been immortalized in the movie Pearl Harbor by Cuba Gooding Jr. A Jr to be proud of.
