Sunday ride to Pioneer’s Cabin
We took a 225 mile ride today that took us from St. Louis to a little town called Percy Illinois to a restaurant called Pioneer’s Cabin. It seemed to take forever to get there but we traveled on some really pretty Southern Illinois roads once we crossed the Mississippi River at Chester IL. We were sure hungry by the time we got there. They have a regular menu, but it seems that most people go there for their special: Fried chicken, Ham and chicken and dumplings with mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, corn, applesauce and fresh baked bread (baked in clay pots) all served country style on big platters and bowls. It’s all you can eat …. and we ate all we could. $10.59 and they serve your drinks in 32 oz Mason jars.
Then we headed on up highway 4 back towards St. Louis. As is our luck we hit the “very slight possibility” or rain and thunder and lightning. I had been listening to the Cardinal baseball game as we rode up the highway and they delayed the game because of rain. I kept looking in the direction of St. Louis and all I could see was sunny. I didn’t think we were that far away that I couldn’t see a storm brewing.
Anyway, we pulled over and donned our rain gear and rode through most of the storm. We did pull over under an overpass for a little while during one part. It didn’t last too long and we were back on th road. The skies looked threatening the rest of the ride, but it didn’t do much after that.
Sunday ride
Yesterday we took a ride over to the Great River Road and up to Grafton Illinois for lunch. Grafton is about 30 minutes into Illinois and an hour from the arch in downtown St. Louis. Grafton is located about where the Illinois River meets the Mississippi River.
We ate at a bait shop turned biker bar – the HAWG PIT BBQ.
Food was decent. We got there right about the time they were opening. Good thing too, because the bikes kept coming.
Then we headed up the River Road to Pere Marquette State Park. I used to go camping and fishing there a lot as a teenager and young man. We just rode up through the park and out again as we had to get back home.
Here are some more pics. Click on any of them to enlarge them.
It was a beautiful day to ride. I knew I should have used sunscreen. I’m a little bit ouchy today.
Crusty old biker
A crusty old biker out on a long summer ride in the country pulls up to a tavern in the middle of nowhere parks his bike and walks inside.
As he passes through the swinging doors, he sees a sign hanging over the bar:
COLD BEER: $2.00
HAMBURGER: $2.25
CHEESEBURGER: $2.50
CHICKEN SANDWICH: $3.50
HAND JOB: $50.00
Checking his wallet to be sure he has the necessary payment, the old biker walks up to the bar and beckons to the exceptionally attractive female bartender serving drinks to a couple of sun-wrinkled farmers.
She glides down behind the bar to the old biker.
“Yes?” she inquires with a wide, knowing smile, “May I help you?”
The old biker leans over the bar, “I was wondering young lady,” he whispers, “Are you the one who gives the hand-jobs?”
She looks into his eyes with that wide smile and purrs “Why yes, yes, I sure am.”
The ole’ biker leans closer and into her left ear whispers softly, “Well, wash your hands real good, cause I want a cheeseburger.”
