the movie was filmed in Rabun County GA/the Chattooga river (which runs along the state line between Georgia and South Carolina; however the book it was based on was inspired by a canoe accident along the Coosawattee river near Ellijay and concerns about deforestation and the loss of wilderness that came with some of the ‘modern’ projects (like building massive dams/reservoirs that flooded those wild untamed rivers – notably “carters dam” which forms “Carters Lake” along the path of that river was the “dam project” that inspired the books adventure down the fictional Cahulawassee River)
