It’s true though. A raise may not address employee discontent fully, but a pizza party is so insulting it reminds employees that, in the employer’s eyes, they are utterly worthless. Employees will then be happy to simply keep their lousy jobs and will remain out of fear of unemployment.
I have another meme that I meant to post with this, as it was appropriate enough:
Employer: I pay you just enough so you don’t leave
Employee: I work just enough so you don’t fire me
I like that meme.
It is more up to management (and senior management) to retain employees; HR is not able to retain employees.
I think some free lunches and other food might help retain employees; I worked at one company that would provide donuts and bagels every Tuesday morning (some offices would do it on Wednesdays) and was well-received.
What really helps retain employees is if they feel needed and management treats them with respect.
