  1. In part 2, at about 5 minutes, that blue-handled tool he called a drill: I bet that is a screwdriver. I was told it is called a Yankee Screwdriver.

The neat part of this screwdriver is that as you push on it (as he did), it rotates, so you can more easily screw in or out by pushing. A spring will “pull” it out as you release your pushing.

My stepfather had a screwdriver like that and I thought it was cool. Unfortunately, it got lost, so as we were going through his stuff after he died, I couldn’t find it.

    • There appear to be two variants of the “Yankee drill”, one with a screwdriver and one with a drill bit. My late daddy worked for the phone company and used them a lot. You do have to be quick on the screwdriver because it will send screws flying when being spun out.

  2. Both the screwdriver and drill are modern versions of the Archimedes screw, though I remember the Yankee screwdriver being touted as a ‘new’ invention.
King Dick spanners (not wrenches, they’re English) used to be found in virtually every tool box in the UK.
