Patco’s Travels – to Memphis

Last weekend, Granddaughter Logan was coaching a soccer tournament, so we took the weekend to travel and catch some soccer!

On Friday morning, Krisgo and I got to the Peabody Hotel in Memphis in time to see the ducks come down the elevator and walk the red carpet to the fountain in the lobby. Logan, Joe and Sammy were saving us a chair at the table as the lobby was filling up fast. The Duck Master explained that this tradition started in the early 1900’s and has continued everyday at 11:00AM when the ducks come down from the roof, swim in the fountain all day and return to the roof via elevator at 5:00PM.

After leaving we explored the Bass Pro pyramid on the riverfront. This is the largest Bass Pro Shop in the world, and also has the largest free-standing elevator right in the center. The pyramid use to be a basketball arena before Bass Pro bought the building.

After having lunch with the Grandkids near Beale street, Krisgo and I went to the Botanical Gardens of Memphis to visit their Troll display throughout the park. Read about the display HERE. It was very neat – we really enjoyed it!

Dave and Staci came down also and we all met for lunch at Central BBQ – where ‘smoke is our sauce’ – very good!

Ready for some grub!

Saturday and Sunday were Soccer tournament days. We watched my Granddaughter Logan and her friend Sammy coach their team to victory. It was chilly and super windy!!

Winner winner BBQ Dinner!

  1. My son and I went to the Peabody Hotel to see the ducks swimming around. It is a neat hotel.

We then went to that Bass Pro Shop. By the way, it has a hotel, too. We did take the elevator up to the outside deck near the top of the pyramid. While it was nice weather at street level, on the deck it was much cooler and extremely windy.

So we had some fun things to see and do while my wife/his mom was at her event.

By the way, in the evening they ID everyone trying to go on to Beale Street–but if you get there before dinner, no problem They ID to make sure you are old enough to drink. There are some neat shops on Beale as well as the various bars with live music (in the evening).

  2. My boss said they went up the elevator and ate at the restaurant at the top. I was planning to try to talk mom into going up the elevator. But even just getting on the second floor shopping area, I was getting a little dizzy myself – so I decided to scrap the idea. Mom said she would have, but was okay with skipping it! 🙂
