photoshopped… gotta make the white folks look stupid, right?
Well, all those calling for English as the US official language do look stupid.
(I have no idea what the original content of this particular sign was)
Most countries do have an official language. Why is that stupid?
It’s stupid because the people who carry on about it are just trying to give an excuse for their hate-filled souls.
I think most of you are missing the mis-spelling on the sign. Geez.
How is it stupid?
You’re just making the assumption that everyone who’s for it has a ‘hate-filled’ soul, by which you mean they’re racist, I’m sure.
Many countries have an official language, why can’t America be one of them?
I’m lucky because I speak both English and Spanish, so I rarely have a problem with communicating to people, but I don’t think it’s too much to ask for people who move to another country to even attempt to learn the language.
It’s not “photoshopped”, I was there, in Houston. And those calling for English as the US official language look stupid because it’s an initiative based on fear. Fear that the land that was taken away from Native Americans is being taken away by another kind of immigrants.
r-d-n-e-c-k spelt the same in any language
Has anyone seen the SAT score of America’s High School students?
English doesn’t seem to be their offical language either.
and how is english not the official language? when i was in school the teachers said that i should learn spanish because it was the fastest growing language in the states. where do i see it? ’employees must wash hands before returning to work.’, ‘for spanish press 2.’ and ‘housekeeping.’
based on fear?! really?! it’s based on fear that is perpetuated by the news. the retards that follow the news to the letter.
remember anthrax? you were scared to open your mail. how many people died? seven!!! who are the fucking idiots that think they are worth the anthrax to waste on them?
perhaps we can create a new language called “Amerikan” and make this our official language. It will be a super-set of english, spanish, and misspelled english words.
Sorry, I’m not racist and my soul is not hate-filled. BUT, I did grow up in an English speaking country and I do believe that a common language helped to make us the great melting pot that we claim to be. A common language is part of what made this country great and catering to various other languages will only help to divide us eventually.
33,000 containers are off loaded every 12 hours in LA harbor full of crap from China… equal amounts are returned full of nothing but air…it’s costing America… I say we send them Mexicans so they can make it cheaper…
jeesh….you people.
I like pie.
Why does wanting people to communicate with each other make you hateful? My parents spoke two languages and did not teach me their first language and I was always resentful of that. I do not think anyone should be embarrased about their heritage but I do feel as though in order for people to feel united they all need to be speaking the same language. It is great to be bilingual but in order to receive any higher education in America one must speak English. Racism is exactly what is motivating people not to learn English. It is just reverse racism.
Having English as an official language is not based on fear.
It is based on the knowledge that all the world’s commerce is more English than not.
It is based on the knowledge that teaching children to adapt to their world is better than not giving children the skills they need to compete.
It is based on the knowledge that communicating is the most basic necessity in civic discourse, job acquisition, negotiating the legal system, determining your best candidate, etc…
It is based on the knowledge that even if we all have our own identities and cultures, we also have a communal identity and culture.
Fear doesn’t have a fncking thing to do with it.
Civic cohesion, a competitive skill set, and more room for warnings on chemical products is what drive folks like me who think we need English as our official language.
Don’t fear the cohesion. Are you afraid Juan may beat your kids to the top of the job ladder?
I don’t. I’m sure Juan will do great. IF he can communicate.
jeeze, it was just a joke, but interesting what will set people off.
It is part fear (we cannot tell if they are saying, maybe even talking about us!) and it is part knowing non-English speaking people will not have the same opportunities. Ever travel to Europe or another foreign speaking country? I am very grateful that I can find someone that speaks English. At least I can find my way around by looking at the signs (if they are not written in an Asian language).
.
Why would “they” come here and be uncomfortable because of language differences? Just look at where some of them come from. In some cases it may be a choice of proper nutrition and medical care or being in a country where you cannot communicate with its citizens. You would jump in a heartbeat, especially if you had children.
.
Hey, I have my own biases and would prefer not to have any foreign speaking people where I live, but who am I to say where anyone should live? As long as everyone is obeying the laws of the land, what can I say?
That’s fine if the Americans want English as the official language. They still won’t know when other ethnicities are talking about them in their face. Not like they care though, right? 😉
That’s just a “snall” spelling error.
