its also the death date of *dimebag* darrell abbot who was the guitarist for the band pantera he was murdered on stage by an angry fan…and yes i do realize i am probly the only 23 yearold goth/cowbou biker on here who knows that 😛
On Julian Lennon’s myspace blog, he put his interesting view up…
“Folks, thank you for all your kind words & support regarding today’s date, but My heart does not ache today, nor will it break today. Today is just another day, just as any other. In fact, the Sun is shining & it’s a Beautiful fresh Winter’s day & a Beautiful day to be alive!
Something very sad happened many years ago on this date, but I don’t Live & Breathe this date the same way many of you do. I appreciate your intentions & your prayers, but I refuse to be saddened this day, or by any other memorial day. I glimpse back over my shoulder on days like these, only to thank those that have gone before, with a wink & a smile & appreciate what went before & what I have learned from everyone & everything that has influenced My Life in positive ways.
So, I wish each & every one of you a warm embrace of positivity for the future & a wink & a smile to the good times & good people that have past. It’s a Beautiful day to be alive.
I wish you all well….”
It was during Monday Night Football and we were getting drunk when Howard Cosell started talking about John Lennon being shot. No one could believe it, and even Cosell wasn’t sure. There was no CNN or constant news in 1980 so we just sat there and waited.
I told people that it wasn’t true because why would anyone shoot John Lennon?
But it was true. And tonight while I’m watching Monday Night Football I hope like hell we run out of stupid people doing stupid things, if just for a couple of hours.
From all that I’ve read, Lennon always was a bit of a arrogant prick. He then turned later into a creep. The whole “world peace” thing was kind of a front for his self-importance. People are always deluded by the image of John from the Beatle days. Funny thing is is that’s what Lennon came to hate most of all, being John Beatle.
Lennon wasn’t murdered because he was some sort of prophet or peace loving good-guy. He was murdered by a nut ball.
Read Albert Goldman’s, Lives of John Lennon for the best “un-Beatle Maniac” take on Lennon.
Lennon had a lot of issues. So you are fooling yourself in thinking that he was some great guy. Hell, no one loathed Lennon more than he hated himself.
Probably his best solo album is Plastic Ono Band. It was before he went hippy-dippy. Before he got on the “Imagine” bullsh*t. Although there were a couple good cuts on Imagine.
Some say that he was beginning to come out of his ’70’s lameness with Double Fantasty.
What’s the old joke – What do Yoko Ono and lizzards have in common? – They both live off of dead beetles.
Mike Firesmith. Why do you always get down on folks comments that maybe interlope into your world view of things. Are you like into group hugs and Beta male sh*t like that.
Lennon wasn’t FREAKIN’ GOD. That was Clapton or was that Dylan?
Plain and simple, I liked his music. He would have been a different person if he hadn’t met Yoko who was a junkie for years, and so was he. He appeared to be a loving Dad to his son Julian, and that is why his son has good feelings about today. I can’t believe that the Hag is still alive but she is. But he made his path….but not his death. That was and still is a psycho, and he’s partially free to walk the streets now. Most of his later music is totally drug induced but he still made some good tunes. Yoko sounded like a cat’s tail being put in a meat grinder and then really wound up full tilt. Yikes!
I would love to have a cd of Imagine but just the piano music,I love it,geez one just has to hear the words to that song and know that guy was not all the way there
I’m kind of with jimbohassler on this one.
John Lennon wasn’t a prophet or a god, just a man – and a self-important one at that.
That’s not to say his death was in any way a good thing, or in any way deserved, but at times like these I think people seem to lose a bit of perspective. His death was of no more or less importance than the thousands of other Americans who died by violence that year and any other year, whose deaths pass largely unnoticed and are soon forgotten.
Even his son has the good sense to say “hey, it was 25 years ago – get over it”, although he has to choose his words more carefully for fear of enraging hordes of doe-eyed fans.
Mike Firesmith. Why do you always get down on folks comments that maybe interlope into your world view of things.
Damn, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings. Regardless of what you might think of Lennon, a lot of people liked his music. As odd as this sounds, there is a lot of seperation between who someone is and the art they create. If you discovered DiVinci was a total asshole would you like the Mona Lisa less?
John Lennon’s music meant a lot of things to a lot of people, and the idea that he, or for that matter, anyone can be gunned down just because that music did mean something, even to a nutcase, is sad.
Are you like into group hugs and Beta male sh*t like that.
What exactly do you have in mind?
Lennon wasn’t FREAKIN’ GOD. That was Clapton or was that Dylan?
By and large I don”t do a lot of hero worship or for that matter any other kind. It isn’t about personality so much as it is the process. If you’ll look around you, here in this place, you’ll notice those who are negative are indeed negative not about the music but the man. Those of us who are still a little disjointed about this, miss a part of the world we lived in, as well as the man who was able to manifest that part in music.
I’m with Bella.
I don’t disparage Lennon. Liked most all of his Beatle and some of his solo music.
Sad he was killed. But the whole pop culture thing that a lot of folks are hooked on is like a dope worse than heroin.
Yoko did mess him up. But that is a whole other story.
We all want a better world but don’t confuse being realistic with being negative.

Still a sad day, RIP John

Check out the song, “GOD”.
Damn, one minute short.

Actually, for “thousands of americans who die by violence each year”, read “hundreds of thousands of people around the world”.

On this we can agree.
Thanks, Deborah.
