“Tis it’s the 4th of July. Another June has gone by, and when they light up our town I think what a waste of gunpowder and sky.” Aimee Mann, 4th of July.
The 4th of July fell on a Sunday and the town of Leslie Georgia, population 500 or so, threw a party at the pool. We had a contest involving a watermelon smeared with Vaseline, one team of kids trying to get it to one side of the pool and another trying to move it in the opposite direction. We had innertube races and I got robbed of that victory. And the lifeguard poured some gasoline in the water, set it fire and dove through it from the Life Guard’s stand.
Then a few Roman candles and sparklers were lit, we ate the watermelons, and as the sun sank low in the sky, everyone went home or to another party.
“It’s one of my faults that I can’t quell my past
I ought to have gotten it gone,” 4th of July, Aimee Mann.
Gerald Ford was President of the United States, and no once really spoke a single word about him all day. There was a party in Washington DC, everyone had a great time, and no one was waving a flag with Ford’s name on it. The National Mall of full of people, and Philadelphia had a lot of tall ships in the harbor. It was an epic day for America. I know the pool party doesn’t seem like much, but the whole day felt different. We were living in historic time, but the day was important for the nation as a whole, and we felt it.
I haven’t felt it in a while. After reading, “In the Garden of Beasts” by Erik Larson, I haven’t felt the same. The idea American’s would invest so much of their emotional well being in one man is, to me, unbelievable. I never thought after so many civilizations have fallen because of one ruler who led them all to ruin, voters would be smarter.
And it’s the one thing I thought we had learned from the fall of Richard Nixon. I thought after Nixon we would know better than to trust a man that morally bereft.
Yet here we are.
American voters have to step off the treadmill of party politics. There is no Left, or Right. There are words invented to divide. There are no Republican or Democrat voters, only American voters. There is no one in office who is held accountable by the voters until the voters decide they’ve had enough of two sides of the same coin.
You do not donate enough to their reelections for them to care about you.
Unless you start voting them, all of them, out, and electing candidates you actually know something about. And that something would be where they get their money.
At some point, Ford, who also served on the Warren Commission that determined the cover story in the JFK assassination was true, decided to pardon Nixon.
I wonder if some sort of deal had been struck, and I wonder if we will see that happen again soon. It won’t matter. As long as there is big money in buy votes, the voters will be slaves to that money.
Take Care,
Mike

There is a difference.
CAI, what I think is worse is the moral decay brought on by the current administration. Lying, openly lying, without even so much as a thin veneer of truth, is so rampant by Trump’s people it hardly registers anymore, which I think is their plan.
The reflecting pool disaster has been lies and grift since it began, and now they’ve charged people with sabotage when we know it was shoddy work by one of Trump’s buddies.
For me you can tell so much about a man by the way he treats those who are weaker than him, both physically and financially. Children are not playthings and neither are people who are trying to make a better life for themselves and their families. I’d rather live next to a hard-working immigrant family than a rich pedophile.
I find our current president and his administration repugnant, and morally bereft. The pedophilia, the racism, the hate, the narcissism. It all needs to go. Not to mention all the self-serving bullshit. It’s disgusting. I’m exhausted by it all. The people who support him are brainwashed or stupid. It’s obviously a cult, how do you excuse this type of behavior? These are insane times.
I too remember the 1976 celebrations. Everyone was proud. Don’t get me wrong, I’m proud of my country, but my current government is a joke. When there is no accountability, and they are trying to take away the rights of citizens. When PEOPLE are being gunned down in the streets for having the audacity to exist and try and either help others or merely live a decent life, it’s time for a serious look inward.
“The people who support him are brainwashed or stupid.”
The Brainwashing of My Dad”
Fox News, OAN, various right wing radio stations and online websites are all out there looking to destroy beliefs in good people. Are they stupid? Well, I’m sure you’ve seen Daily Show interviews of these people, so sure, they’re total morons. The smart ones fall prey to the propaganda because the right wing media uses fear to grab them emotionally.

So the answer to your question is yes, they are brainwashed and others are just stupid.
Chick, that tracks. Trump is a bully that has to be the one true god in any room. You’d never hear of Obama belittling someone in public, friend or foe. Trump is the white trash president, and for reasons that horrify me, it got him enough votes to be president.
Mike,
I have one wish before I go. That is to visit the Trump grave site.
Grog! Long time no see! Let me know when you plan to visit him. I’d like to be there.
It may not be universal, but it is very common for people to dig in deeper went met with a difference of opinion. Heaven forbid we admit we were wrong about anything (not limited to politics).
But the most damning institutions in this country are Congress and the TV news. Both are dedicated dividing the people, mostly by pandering to their sense of fear. What fear is that? The fear that someone who doesn’t look like them is somehow doing better than them by taking opportunities away from them.
I, for one, cannot remember a time that I ever applied for the jobs that an undocumented worker was doing.
What I do begrudge is that Velveeta Voldemort and the oligarchs are making bank on every vile act he perpetrates against us, other countries, or national monuments, etc. while we worker bees have to choose which bills we will pay and which meal we will have to skip.
And the MAGAlodytes continue to worship the shit stain in his pants.
Voters need to hold the elected to at least the same standard as we would be held to: law-abiding decency.
BS, the inequality between the super rich and the poor is going to cause a revolt. There’s more empty houses than homeless people yet no one can afford to pay rent or buy anymore.
