Sorry, Mike, that is not from my part of the Midwest–either the area I grew up nor the area I live in now.
My guess, though, is that the sweetness of the rolls offset the spices of the chili.
I’m lost on this one, too.

I’m from SW Michigan and that’s not familiar at all.
Lived in S Cal, and now in Tenn. Traveled all 48 and Canada. Even been to Central America and Asia. Never saw a combination like this. Chili/Beans and roll for a sweet fart?
Cincinnati style chili (like Gold Star or Skyline) has boiled hamburger, beans and cinnamon in it, but the picture above makes no sense to me.
