James Brown’s first bag installation

James brown bagNurse Wayums urges the Godfather Of Soul to hold very still while Doctor Billups installs the youngster’s very first bag at the Get On Up General Hospital on July 16, 1932. Brown was remembered for being very brave at the time, and hospital staff recall getting a chuckle from his “Law ha’ moicy” outburst as the procedure was completed.

Brown would miraculously use this bag for the next 30 years, until excessive hip wear and gun possession forced him to have it replaced with a new polyester-blend bag in May of 1965.

He celebrated the occasion by releasing his new single, “Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag” later that year. It went on to become one of 1965’s biggest hits on the soul charts, and Brown’s new bag lasted him until his death in 2007.

  1. I have one of those colostomy bags you speak of. Life is good, just different. At times I get depressed, that’s why I get pissed off at times. Jonco, did you realize I had it on our visits?

  2. Mick Nash, I would not wish this on anyone. I still enjoy a normal life. Yes, I can still be hugged with no ill effects. After reading that, I am glad I have a sense of humor.

  3. Jonco, this is one of those moments when I’m almost reluctant to claim authorship, but you and I both meant this joke to be received in a far different way. I think I’m safe in saying that neither of us meant any offense. Here is a post I placed on my blog this morning that should help explain things, especially to those who aren’t James Brown fans and don’t remember his biggest hit, “Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag”, as fondly as Jonco and I apparently do.

    • Cooper,
When I saw this I thought I knew exactly what you were referring to… the James Brown song “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag”. That’s absolutely the only connotation I got from your post. A colostomy bag NEVER crossed my mind. It’s not mentioned in the post what kind of bag it is… just that it’s a “bag”…. “A Brand New Bag”. As a side note, I don’t recall ever having read or heard anything about James Brown having a colostomy bag.
I don’t know whether KLAW has a colostomy bag or not, he’s such a prankster it’s hard to tell when he’s leveling with you or not. But it doesn’t matter to me, he’s still who he is and that won’t change. I believe he knows me well enough to know my sense of humor. I try to find humor in all subjects. No personal offense is intended.
