I thought it was an outstanding performance. Especially considering I’m not a Heath Ledger fan (hadn’t seen anything he was in that I know of), nor am I a big Batman fan. He was mesmerizing in that film… to me anyway. I actually thought twice about posting this because it sort of kicks at Jack Nicholson, who I really like as an actor. He always plays the same type of character, but I just like him and always look forward to his films.
Larry, I’m totally with you. It’s more like that the character he got was a lot better (that is a merit of Nolan and the make-up artists) then what Burton tossed upon Nicholson, a colorful clown. Still, Nicholson shone through, Ledger “just” played his role great.
sorry guys got to disagree. Ledger was awesomas maximus. I saw Jack when I was about 6 and have seen it multiple times since. Regardless of anything Heath ledger’s joker was better. The joker should be retired after this.
Forgot: What does scary me is that the old batman movies came out when i was a small kid. So for me those are my batman movies. My joker was an idiot with mack-up being silly. However, for my kids there joker will be a total homicidal maniac. Same goes for star wars. For me its the original trilogy. For them its going to be the new cr*p.
Blah, blah, blah. He was not overrated, though perhaps overexposed due to his passing. The performance was about as good as one can get. I thought Ledger had a zenith with Brokeback Mountain, but then he goes and does this. So what if Jack had a poorer characterization to work with? Is this supposed to make his performance endearing because he was working with less? Bottom line, his performance, along with the Nolan set of Bat-movies, is in an entirely different than Jack’s performance, and the aforementioned Burton movies, however good they may be.
Heath Ledger was the most sinister and frightening joker an actor could possibly have done. I’m sure that if he did not die, they would have made a few more movies with him playing the villain. What he did do was make sure nobody would ever attempt to play another joker to take his place. It would be near impossible for anyone to top that performance.
So I would doubt very much there would ever be another Batman movie with the Joker in it.
And the “real” reason Jack didn’t show up at this years Academy Awards show.
I think this guy’s performance was way overrated.

Cesar Romero is still my Joker.
