  1. as someone who lives in the same state of the country Leunig lives in (Victoria, Australia) let me reassure you that the whimsical irony depicted here is very typical of his gentle work
    always observant
    sometimes obscure
    never rascist
    never hurtful
so as others have said, just enjoy

  2. It’s funny how racism is allowed to occur all over the world every day, and yet when a black man becomes president suddenly there is this universal gasp of what this means for white people. This cartoon isn’t really a joke nor is it racist-just social commentary.

  3. No, the cartoon is saying that back in the day black men cleaned up after white men.

Now, its the same – Obama is going to have to clean up after all the s*** that Bush has done to the country. Where does he even start?

    Duh.

  4. While I will be the last person to even slightly suggest that Bush is one of the Good Guys, don’t be blind-sided by all of the rhetoric that the news mavens feed you. The largest percentage of the mess that Bush is leaving behind is the result of the pissing contest between the liberal congress and the supposedly conservative Bush. What started out as politics wound up being a personal “vendetta” against anything that Bush proposed and the congressional leadership.

  5. Of course it’s racist, against caucasians… But’s that’s ok….right. Only whites have to be tolerant, right? Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

When Obama screws up will any off you remember? NO!

AND he will, mark my words.

  6. 95% of black people voted for Obama, 55% of ‘white’ people voted for McCain. People say that demonstrates that black people only voted for Obama because he is black. Me, I think that 5% of white and black people have judgment so poor as to not vote for Obama, who is one of the greatest leaders ever to bless America, and 40% of white people voted McCain because they are racist, or ‘racially sensitive’ as you Americans call yourselves.

  7. I’d say most people that voted mccaine buy into the whole “obamas a terrorist/muslim/socialist” thing. Nice try Fox

  8. The quote is ” You can fool some of the people some of the time but not all the people all the time”. Applied here, racism is subjective. An understanding of that is in the laws. We have all been misguided by media and political sound bites. In a mixed crowd, tell a joke defaming Hispanics, all will laugh but Hispanics. Tell the same joke about Whites and you get the same result.

I am black, wanted a Jewish friend to go with me to see the Deer Hunter. She asked me if I was an idiot who couldn’t see the racism in it. We had a friend who is Vietnamese. Till then, I only looked shallowly at the impact of racism. Try this on, if I said you are all brilliant and demonstrate a keen sense of awareness on this subject. How well would that be taken? If I said you are all idiots for spending so much energy on this foolishness? then what? Look at the commentary above, small jokes about race have a rippling effect. If we are in a new paradigm maybe we could just start by doing away with the little shit. “Oh Brave New World”.

  9. This has been an educating read…. no sorry …i meant funny.
The posts are funnier than the cartoon. It is just a joke.. nothing racist. If anything its pointing fun at southern banjo playing Americans.

What would make this these posts more interesting would be if we all put age/sex/race/nationality. Ill start….

oh by the way ….GO OBAMA!

    33/m/white european/British

  10. ironic – yes

    funny – yes

racist – if you want something to bitch about

I voted Obama. Not because he was black but because he’s the man for the job.
I am so proud of Americans who ARE in fact racist putting aside their opinions and voting for Obama. I have a few friends who went through a real struggle admitting that a person of a different color could be our president.
It is a brand new day. Not only is Obama going to take many steps in the right direction but he will have our attention.
I have never been so involved as I have been this election year.
Sad, I know. But i’m here! Better late than never.
Let’s breathe in the air of change everyone and work for a better tomorrow. We have a good man behind us.

  11. obama has to clean up the shite of everybody, not just white people though. last time i checked the us was made up of a lot more than just white people. and pretty much an equal amount of all of those people as far as i can tell fucked it up with this commercial madness. dont worry, its out of control now and the only thing to stop the time bomb is the detonation. cant wait

  12. Lol at white people who are omg soooo offended that the cartoon is “racist” against white people.
    Cracka please.

  13. Time to let it go folks, next guy in the white house might be a Chinaman! They own our asses, no matter what color, right now. America is a melting pot internally, but in the world population we are only a tiny speck of black and white in an Asian world. China has more post-grad students with IQs of 130+ today, than the U.S.A. has high school students. None of them eat high greenhouse gas producing beef – they eat pork, fish and veggies, all safe for the environment. Few of them drive cars, none of them live in McMansions and they outproduce American students with ease. China has more English speakers than the United States. Fear This America. India runs a close second to China today, and will kick American asses in computing, engineering and medicine in the decade to come. Every night, young radiologists in Bangalore read CT scans e-mailed to them by emergency-room doctors in the U.S. By education alone, they will conquer and defeat and render America a third world country in the next ten years. They are not wasting time trying to figure out the merits and faults of Americans by color or race, they know that most of us do not have a high school diploma and they know they can beat that! They wisely leave heavy work to machines, and do not need great physical size or strength to supersede us. The astounding Chinese have epoched the great GM, of U.S.A. in producing an Electric/gas/plug-in car! They are driving them in the streets of China as we speak, they will be retailed in the U.S.A. by 2011, they will cost half the price of a “Volt” and they are “On Order” for Israel! GM take a deep breath, your naughty parts have just been cut off by a Chinese high-tech competitor, and the “Volt” is still “Vapor-ware”! See:http://www.cleantech.com/news/3983/chinas-byd-sells-first-mass-produced-plug-cars And guess who went to Korea for batteries for the “All American” “Volt?, well, GM of course, and paid the flight over with your tax dollars! No color problem there, none at all. The money was green. The (GRD) great republican depression is about to reveal the true score to the American people, and a revolt will most likely ensue.Vulture capitalism has destroyed our country, our democracy and our lives, not blacks, not whites!

  14. I find it ironic that so many people have discussed racism in this thread to tell how the cartoon is not racist. It is, very much so. It is defining between at least two different people based purely on race. I’m not saying that it’s negative for African-American’s, but it is still racist (for that reason, most of you would not call it so). I think it’s sad that the modern definition of racism is that it’s anything that does not benefit or is negative about minorities, and not ever the other way around

yesh obama has to clean up all the shit “bush has done”
because bush is the only one who ever ever was a white president…

  16. It is funny that everyone thinks that G.W. Bush caused a big mess. when in fact it was the people of the U.S. in whole who caused it. We allowed him to be re-elected, WE allowed the Congress to give him the power to send troops anywhere he wanted. I believe he was a good president, I believe that he was good for the country. I don’t trust obama not because he is black but he is currently making us look weak in front of other nations. We Americans are known for sticking our nose were it doesn’t belong.I believe its time we let the world deal with itself and just take care of ourselves for awhile. lets see how long they last without our 2 cents. Too me the comic is funny but has no relivance since one man did not make a mess with our nation but the nation itself. We are so fast to point our fingers at someone else. maybe we should look in the mirror, and take responsibility for OUR COUNTRY.(by the way I am a human, the only race I know, we just come in different shades)
