everyone’s a little bit racist, sometimes
doesn’t mean we go committing hate crimes
racist jokes may be uncouth
but we laugh (because they’re based on truth)
that’s funny it rhymes…you should call it “Don’t Hate Segregate”
ALL OF YOU ARE OVERLOOKING ONE THING:
The gov’t is still primarly white. So it’s not a black man cleaning up white people’s, mess, it’s a white people being told by an African/White man to clean up their mess!
Multicultural pals, unite!
I fail to see how you can think this cartoon is about making fun of Bush, but that it doesn’t have to do with race. It doesn’t even MENTION Bush, it’s implied that he is the “white guy” that made the mess the “black guy” had to clean up. If you don’t think it’s racist read the cartoon again and replace white with black and vice versa. ergo, it would essentially say, “white men had to clean up the mess made by black men and they still do today” if you don’t think THAT is a racist statement then you can claim this isn’t a racist cartoon, but you can’t have it both ways, don’t buy into the double standard we have in America.
That doesn’t make this cartoon wrong or evil, it’s a political cartoon meant to foster debate and shed light on issues, and it actually sheds light on the issue of the continued dominance of racism in American thought and culture. If you don’t believe me read this thread and consider the whole election: race is a hugely dominant factor. If America weren’t racist you would never have heard any of this crap about Obama being a black man, if we weren’t racist nobody would CARE what color his skin was. If we weren’t so racist this cartoon wouldn’t make any sense to us. The first step to solving the problem is admitting you have one, and even after all this time we still can’t admit we have a problem with racism, “they” have a problem maybe, our ancestors had a problem maybe, but clearly none of you will admit you have a problem. Stop lying to yourselves. I’ll admit it right here, I CAN BE RACIST JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE. Now that I am aware of that fact I can look at the reasons why I do things and eliminate the racist ones, I can eliminate those stupid behaviors, but those of you who blindly refuse to see the truth will never change, after all why should you, you don’t suffer the same fallacies as EVERY OTHER HUMAN ON THE PLANET. right?
I think it’s funny!
“ITT ignorant rednecks pretend that white people are oppressed.”
No seriously this cartoon shamelessly jokes about the traumatic history of systemic abuse and oppression of my people at the hands of the black American hegemony, which dates all the way back to … never.
This is the politically correct racism. If one thinks every “problem” that needs to be “fixed” by President Obama was created by old white men then a profound degree of ignorance is being displayed. Please review the players in the CRA, Fannie & Freddie and the need for banks to take toxic loans not to be charged with racism and you will see multiracial culpability including multiple African American Congress members. BTW, President Obama’s mother was white- he is multiracial, not black. Tiger Woods is multiracial, not Black so calling either of them Black is done either for enhancement of Black pride (a very good purpose) or for racist purposes, as in this cartoon, against white men.
“I’ve never, never found that to be true. As a white woman, I’ve been welcomed into the homes of families of black friends as a guest, with friendliness and politeness. There have been very few instances in which I’ve felt racism coming at me, from the time I was in middle school to high school to college and beyond, during my career, I’ve had black friends as well as white and Asian and Latino. It’s all in what you project yourself. When you treat people as equals, nine times out of ten, they’ll treat you the same way. I’d say you are projecting an ugly attitude and getting one back, if this is how you feel.”
Aren’t you the lucky one, Bryony. Because there was me thinking racism was based on skin colour, not ‘projecting’ an ugly attitude. Spoken like a true dumbass who has no idea what her Asian, black and Latino friends might have experienced, what prejudice they may have encountered. Oh, white privilege… what a beautiful thing. And for all you other idiots who think this cartoon is racist, google ‘stuff white people do’, and read every post on that blog. That’ll make you fall out of Cloud Cuckoo Land pretty damn quick.
BrownFoxx, I think Byrony was just trying to say that “reverse racism” doesn’t really occur unless a white person brings it on his or herself. In a society like the US it’s obviously extremely hard for a white person to experience “racism” and so her point was that it must be a result of the white person’s poor attitude. Nowhere in that statement did I interpret it to mean other MINORITY GROUPS only experience discrimination because of “attitude.” That’s clearly not true.
I totally don’t think the comic is about races. And I’ll tell you why…
A. There’s like, not a single horse anywhere in the comic.
B. There’s no place where you can place your bet.
C. Them people is sittin’ down. No track. No car. Nothing. Just a rockin’ chair.
So how could this comic be about races? I think I’d know a race if I seen one.
This comic is about black people, white people, the president, and black people. And white people. Dang, everyone. Seriously.
“President Obama’s mother was white”
and she still is white
“- he is multiracial, not black. Tiger Woods is multiracial, not Black so calling either of them Black is done either for enhancement of Black pride (a very good purpose) or for racist purposes, as in this cartoon, against white men.”
do women exist?
Obama is a US Senator. Congress can’t do much without the Presidents help. And the President can’t do much without Congress’ help. So to say a white man caused these problems is ludicris. He(Obama) is just as responsible as Bush. So, you could say, Obama is left to clean up his own mess. And if he does what he promised to do, he will make the mess even worse by spending and spending and spending and spe………… with the help of a Democratic Congress.
95% of blacks would have voted for ANY democrat. It’s what happens every election. Add a black man and oh…95% STILL vote democrat.
Find something else to complain about.
No the cartoon isn’t racist. It’s a simple ironic observation…quite funny and witty. (spoken by a non Obama voting Non McCain voting black male.
Another thing I find Hugely funny: McCain & Obama are not but a hairs breadth apart. Get away from your dumb a** party affiliations. The ‘majors’ are no longer viable and do not represent good for Americans
it was a joke folks, and a very funny one . you people are trying to get serious about a joke.
you americans are strange! tho some of you are nice. ffs take a look at yourselves…
the american democrats are still right wing so you have nothing to worry about.
hmmm, one point everyone seems to have missed is the depiction of the two characters in the cartoon- stereotypical country hicks, the banjo (think of deliverance) the rockin’ chair, cmon, it’s a joke on the low IQ whites….
Maybe it takes a non-american to see that?
Leunig rocks, go to http://www.leunig.com.au/
Whether Obama is white or black (actually he is both) makes no difference.
The funny part (or I should say the really sad part) is that, once again, the Democrats are left with the terrible mess that the Republicans made while they lined their pockets with our hard earned money.
You know, I read the comments here and at other sites and it just amazes me how ignorant and uninformed Americans are about their own Country and about the events that led up to this catastrophe.
Doesn’t anyone in America pay attention to what goes on around you? No wonder these political crooks get by with destroying our world. Apparently, none of you give a sh__. You elect them, and then you don’t care what they do, as long as you don’t have to think about it too much.
Why don’t you all just go back to your televisions, your church groups, your sports and your beer drinking, and let the people who pay attention make the comments on here. That way you all won’t sound so retarded!
Better yet, why not raise your own kids to be tolerable citizens, so we don’t have to support them or put them in prison.
If it were turned around it would be considered racism……
1. It’s racist.
2. Racist jokes are funny, no matter what race is being ridiculed.
3. The comic isn’t even *that* funny.
hahaha.
truth hurts sometimes.
I am so tired of people playing the race card. Get over it, already.
Okay, the cartoon is the epidomy of reverse racism, which is totally okay by America’s new standard, I think its even in the new handbook. I think its bull sh*t that its okay for everyone to depict white Americans as back country hicks, but if a white person shows a black person sitting on a stoop of a government funded housing complex eating a watermelon they are going to hell. We need to rethink everything! This current crisis wasn’t brought on by one class, one president, or for that matter anyone in the government. IT WAS however brought on by or lack of concern for what the government does. We still live in a Republic/Democracy so it is us who has the final say. Americans need to get involved instead of sitting here waiting on our government to hand us either bull sh*t or hand outs.
Now to Obama, I believe that we need to at least wait until he fixes something or makes something better before we start handing out holidays and putting his face on the front of our money. I don’t think he will be able to fix everything that he has promised. Personally I believe that he said and promised everything under the sun just to get into office. His support from Bill Clinton didn’t impress me either, B. Clinton didn’t do anything great as president, don’t get me wrong he was an “ok” president but nothing noteworthy was done by him (perhaps some stains on dresses) but thats a different story.
I do think this country is in need of reform, but not the kind we are currently capable of. We need to get back to basics. Our country was and is great because of one thing that was drafted over 200 years ago and holds the keys to everything we need. We need to get back to The Constitution it holds everything we need. I believe our government has strayed way to far from what it was meant to be. The oath that the president takes says nothing of welfare or war, but of the enforcing of The Constitution. He needs to get back to that.
In closing, our country wasn’t built in day and it will take more than a day to fix. I wish that one man could fix it but he won’t. The last couple of times countries have looked to one man to fix them it ended in terribly (cites Napoleon, Mussolini, Hitler, etc..) I’m not comparing Obama to these men but there are comparisons to the way they got support.
Im black, and I am not at all offended by this. It’s true. It’s just a funny way of portraying it. And you’re missing the big point We have a black pres. who has the best chances at cleaning alot of Bush’s and his Good Ol’ Boys shit up. Who else is going to do it?
yeah, thats, intelligent… morons, because of course this was all white peoples fault, i mean i made sure i did everything in my power, when i joined the military to help fight the war, to make people of other races pay for my races mistake, yeah, im not paying for it or helping the cause, of course not, hey you know what, next time i see a man tying a bomb to his child and sending him over to a group of fellow armed forces members, ill be sure to turn the other cheek and let someone of another race solve the problem, because thats what white people do bets, ass hole
I miss the days when people picked on people because of the way they looked or where they came from. I loved watching politically incorrect television. I love racist jokes. why is it that everything that we say these is offensive. why cant it simply be funny. and everyone learn to tuff’n up.
It is absolutely racist against whites wtf! It portrays white people as lazy shiftless hillbillies. It is bullshit, so many Black Americans voted for Obama solely because he was black, tell me is that racist? This entire administration is going to be founded on racism and it is ridiculous. I dont even want to get into statistics about blacks and welfare.
I kinda agree with Nora Jones but hey we’ve got to be somewhat sensitive to the history and experience of a race otherwise what are we? Lets learn from history a little. After all history has taught us we are not always right and it is important to lean from it just look at vietman we were wrong to be there we lost and yet we have finally accepted it and well we haven’t learned from it but we certainly could have. I am a liitle NO a LOT drunk as I read this and just got in a monster fight with my husband so I may not make sense so just ingnore me!
This comic isn’t racist, it’s implying that Bush did a bad job and Barack is going to clean it up
=
Black man cleaning up a white mans mess.
There’s nothing racist about this, it’s humor talking about how bad a job Bush did [Which is not true]
The amazing thing is that a vast majority of Americans actually believe that it was the Republicans who made this mess! The truth is that it was the democrats who made this mess starting over two years ago when they got took control of congress. Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Nancy Pelosi Harry Reid have all waged war on the American economy by forcing banks and mortgage institutions to lend money to people they knew couldn’t pay back the loan. It all started with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and Franklin Rains (who is black by the way). President Bush tried to bring in regulators to oversee Fannie Mae/Mac and the democrats refused to let them in! It is the leftist white men that Barrack will need to clean up after- however, don’t hold your breath for him to do anything responsible.
get a life guys……dont you have anything more important to do that debate weather a cartoon is racist or not.
I can think of better forums to debate racism, and it;s effects on society. It was a cartoon. If your that thin skinned, go put blinders on….and yes, I’m a southern white redneck, that plays a banjo, and is married to my sister/cousin.
@ JJ
First, there is no such thing as reverse racism; there is no definitional target. I don’t see where an Australian depicting an white American stereotype is racist. By definition the comment would have to be between races — in this case it is not.
Second, Clinton’s administration reduced the US debt and reached surplus for the first time in a very long time. You should stay out of political commentary unless you actually know something of value.
The Bush administration locked us into two wars and an endless quagmire while simultaneously deregulating banking and housing in a manner that allowed toxic debt. In 8 years they crushed a rather positive trend that was left to them by Clinton and ran up the biggest debt in history. So, yes, one administration is responsible.
Poor, poor white folks. How terribly downtrodden they are. How dare someone make a satirical remark that may be interpreted by white racists as against them. How can that person sleep at night? If you’re not smart enough to get the joke, don’t try to twist it into something it isn’t. Otherwise you might be hired by Fox.
It’s a political cartoon referring to this the South’s history of slave-owning and how the current situation is once again all about blacks doing the work after whites sitting back. It is -not- racist, in fact, perhaps it is racist against caucasians because it assume that caucasions would like there to be slavery and can’t take care of themselves withough an African American saving them.
Honestly, have some reason. It’s a political cartoon. Nothing more.
Hey Ben… Go ahead and give yourself an award for being so f*cking brilliant! Of course America is rampant with racism. You seriously just came to that realization? The whole world is full of racism. So yes, it is important that we had our first black President Elect, because it’s 2008 and it’s just now happening. However, just because people are excited about the fact that we have voted in a black man for president does not take away from that fact that he is also the best candidate for the job. This is why he won so get over yourself. And people, it was a joke, political satire, sarcasm, whatever you want to call it. Just enjoy the dam cartoon!
I cant believe people are upset by this… its so obviously photoshopped. Ive seen hundreds of them I can tell
Why are lots of blacks on welfare? It cant be because, you know, 40 years ago racism was still very common and accepted, because well, its easy to bounce back and feel accepted and be successful in a society that never has accepted you. You wonder why 95% of blacks voted for Obama…Maybe its because they like his message. I understand Obama in a way that seems to elude most repubs. I voted for him because of that understanding, not because WOO! BLACK PRESIDANTS. We are all Americans not “blacks” “whites” “liberals” “conservatives” Where does the need for a statistic that tells which race is voting for which canditate come from? Racism didnt die with segregation, people.
People Pl-ease! this comic is not racist against anyone it is a political burn that you Americans don’t seem to get.
rac⋅ism
/ˈreɪsɪzəm/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [rey-siz-uhm] Show IPA Pronunciation
–noun
1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one’s own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
sounds like the average joe’s explanation for voting either way in 2008.
Barack is black like me, so he’s fit to be president..
John McCain is white like me, so he’s fit to be president.
Banjoist. Pure and simple. Oh, and as long as we’re all bent up about color – the guys in the comic are brownish pink.
Touche~
I have Aspergers, but even I am not so literal-minded as some of you clowns. It seems to me that the crux of the joke rests on the disproportion between “cleaning up” as a slave or servant, and doing so as president. This sort of wordplay by juxtaposition is often a source of merriment, or so I’m told. Yes, there is a slam on Bush, but that guy certainly doesn’t represent me in all my honky splendor, though I wouldn’t mind buying him a drink.
An educated, politically correct, non voting horse, walks into a bar….
Bar tend asks… why the long face!
The joy of modern day politics does not change the fact that there was a time when black “folks” could indeed only get jobs cleaning up after white bastards (says the white girl from the north), and I have to tell you as much as I am glad I don’t live in that mentality ruled world, DAMN I AM GLAD OBAMA GONNA BRING IT ALL BACK! ok yeah that sucked as commentary.
that’s the most sexist cartoon i’ve ever seen.
if its all clinton’s fault perhaps we should have stuck with hilary. then she could clean up after her husband, like wives have been doing for centuries….
hey , if it makes you laugh ,it’s funny …end of story
Wellcome to the third world, America!
good god i can’t believe i read all that drivel. i suppose this is me contributing my own tepid urine to this public wall of graffiti obscuring a joke that was only kind of funny in the first place. i’m going to go stick my head in the oven now.
no it’s not racist. look at the news paper on the bottom. that’s Obama getting elected. The reference made about black people still cleaning up white mess is in reference to Obama cleaning up the mess all the presidents before him left.
