JAWS Returns

JAWSAnnapolis MD:
While the vessel ‘Dawn Raider’ out of Markleys Marina in Essex, Md. was fishing for Striped Bass (also locally known as Rock Fish), this Great White was hooked in the mouth but only resisted slightly for 15 minutes before it came up alongside t he boat to have a look; long enough for one of the crew members to slip a rope a round it’s tail!!! ‘And that’s when   things heated up!!
.  The Shark took off towing the  42 foot fishing boat backwards through the water at about 7 Knots. Just  like in JAWS, the boat was taking on water over the stern and the crew  watched in horror as the shark would actually jump completely out of the  water at times. This went on for an hour before the shark finally  drowned. She weighed in at 1035 LBS. It is suspected she followed a weak  El Nino current into local waters in search of food.  Although mid 60 degree water is considered ideal for these sharks, the larger ones can tolerate water in the low 50s.

  1. I find this one a bit disturbing. Taking an hour to drown a shark that posed them no threat anyway. It drowned trying to run away! Aren’t we humans grand…

  2. This is just as pathetic as killing whales…goodness knows how many young ones wont be born now…rather than rewarding these morons i think they should be jailed…

  3. Mike Firesmith wrote: “And a bunch of idiots killing a fish impresses who?”

It impresses themselves and other idiots, that’s who!

I am far from being an animal rights person (I despise those creeps), but unless that shark was caught because it posed an immediate threat….

Unfortuanetly, it’s not such a media event having a picture taking of you standing next to the rod and reel that hooked such an animal and next to the camera used to take its picture just before you released it back to the waters unharmed.

  4. This is pretty amusing. I live in Maryland, not too far from Annapolis. I received this story as an email several months ago from a friend who I thought was pretty smart. As soon as I saw the picture, I Googled the phone number that is on the lift. Turns out it is a Nova Scotia phone number.

  5. If this shark had killed an innocent beach swimmer or surfer… or family member, you’d all be singing a different tune. Who knows how many humans won’t die because this thing was killed, or how many humans it’s potential babies would have killed. The boat was out to kill bass who didn’t pose any threat either, besides shark is good eating! Open your minds people.

  6. The shark photo was forwarded by a friend. I was immediately skeptical. Thanks for setting the record straight! In reply to ” actions” open mind, I believe that if one was to research the International Shark Attack File one would find that while Great Whites lead in the percentage of shark attacks, the number is quite low along the eastern seaboard of the U.S. If the shark was killed to be consumed is one thing , but the notion that it was killed to save lives is pure nonsense!

  7. action, only one or two people die a year from shark attacks (as victor mentioned), and one one of the main reason shark attacks happen is because of human stupidity. Like WooHoo, I’m not all “SAVE THE ANIMALS D:<” but I do believe that catching a female shark, in her prime, durring mating season is just rediculous. Derek, sharks can drown in a sense, from what I know the fishing hook could have gotten in its gills (equvilant to our lungs), wrecking them, make it harder for it to get oxygen from the water, thus leading it to “drown” when overexerting itself…… of course, I may be wrong, it’s a guess using what I know… anyone can feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.
