The secret to a long life

A tough old cowboy from south Texas counseled his grandson that if he wanted to live a long life, the secret was to sprinkle a pinch of gunpowder on his oatmeal every morning.

The grandson followed this advice religiously until the day he died at age 103.

He left behind 14 children, 30 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren, 24 great-great-grandchildren, and a 15-foot hole where the crematorium used to be.

World’s biggest burger

BurgerThe world’s biggest hamburger has been unveiled.
The enormous meal sells for $499 at Mallie’s Sports Grill and Bar in Southgate, Michigan, USA.  Restaurant owner Steve Mallie said it took eight hours to bake the bun big enough to hold the 185lb (84kg) burger.

He said: ”Being in the Guinness World Records book is the greatest accomplishment we’ve ever done.  ”I’ve worked my entire life to build this restaurant and being able to have the notoriety of Guinness makes it just that bit more rewarding.”

The burger is baked for 15 hours before it is topped with cheese, lettuce and tomato and wheeled out into the restaurant on a trolley.  It is just one of the weird and wonderful feats marked in the latest edition of the Guinness World Records, which is published recently.

The Union Covered Bridge of Missouri

Our motorcycle ride took us to Mark Twain Lake and then onto the Union Covered Bridge.

Union2

Union3Completed in 1871 by bridge builder Joseph Elliot, is the only Burr Arch truss design still standing in Missouri.  Located 8 miles southwest of Paris Missouri, the Monroe County bridge measures 120 feet long and is 17 feet, 6 inches wide.

The Union Covered Bridge  was built almost entirely of native oak. Oak is a common wood in northeast Missouri, easily available, hard, durable and reasonably easy to work with.  All of the wood used in the Union Covered Bridge, with the exception of the cedar shingles, is oak.

Another interesting feature of the bridge is that the siding is horizontal, as it would be on a house.  The other covered bridges in Missouri have vertical siding, as would be found on a barn.

While we were there we learned from an area resident that the lower siding was “kicked off” from the inside during a time the river ran very high due to flooding in order to keep the rushing water from washing the bridge away.  The rushing water could then run through the bridge.  I wasn’t clear on when that happened or why it hasn’t since been repaired.

Hard to believe the water got that high up on this creek.
