Bad day at the beach

Bad day at the beach

This photo comes from the Houston Chronicles website.  The photo caption says, ‘Galveston residents Henry Vasquez grabs a souvenir from the rubble of Murdock’s Pier and Hooters left by Hurricane Ike that reads “A bad day at the beach. What??? There’s no bad day at the beach.” Seawall Blvd.’

I wonder what the caption would say if this were a black man carrying off the “souvenir”.  Would he be a looter?

Remnants of Hurricane Ike

When did St. Louis move closer to the coast?  Just a couple weeks ago we got quite a rain storm from Hurricane Gustav.  Now today we’re getting the remnants of Hurricane Ike.  I don’t remember this happening like this before.

I put together this video from my back deck this morning.

This hit the St. Louis area about 7 am just as forecast.  Winds gusting to 40 MPH.  We got up to 5 inches of rain in just under 2 hours.  There are thousands around here without power.  Of course that’s nothing compared to what the people in Texas have gone through.

This storm is supposed to be out of here by this afternoon, and it’s already slowed down quite a bit.

Stormpulse

This is fascinating.  Check it out.

Stormpulse map

Stormpulse shows active hurricanes and tropical storms. You can turn on layers to show projected paths and historical tracks. You can see all active hurricanes at once, drag the map around, or click on a specific storm.  You can turn radar and cloud cover off and on too.

You can see detailed information like the wind speed, category, pressure, movement, and detailed graphics to keep them in check. Stormpulse has data going back to 1851, so you can see the paths and intensity of previous hurricanes.

Kite surfer flies thru tropical storm Fay

This happened on Ft. Lauderdale Beach yesterday.

One report I heard said he was in critical condition.  Other reports say he’ll be OK.

On a side note, my aunt was evacuated to Orlando yesterday because of possible flooding in the Port Charlotte area, but was back home this afternoon.  She’s very tired but OK otherwise.  She’s doing pretty good for 93.

Update:  This is the 2nd video I posted.  The other one became “unavailable” shortly after I posed it.  Let’s see how long this one is available.

Tornado hits a bus in Poland

Incredible footage of a Tornado hitting a bus in Poland August 15 has surfaced on YouTube, complete with the bus rolling over as the Tornado hits it. It appears too real to be fake, and news reports confirm the tornado in the area at the time. Just be happy you weren’t on the bus.
