I’ll just jump through the window to escape

A Zion man who tried to escape police by jumping through a window learned the hard way that what happens on television is not always possible in real life.

Authorities said Travis Copeland, 19, bolted out of a Lake County felony courtroom Wednesday and ran across the courthouse skyway over Washington Street in Waukegan. The skyway connects courtrooms inside the Lake County Government Center to courtrooms at the Lake County jail.

With Lake County Sheriff’s deputies approaching and running out of options, Copeland – who was in court after violating a bond condition – tried to shoulder block his way through a window of the two-story skyway in an attempt to escape.

The bulletproof glass did not give way and Copeland, clearly staggering after hitting his head and shoulder, took two steps back and laid down on the floor with his hands spread over his head, and waited to be arrested.

Driver’s blood alcohol content was 9 times legal limt

Drunk-drivingSouth Dakota authorities say drives BAC was .708
RAPID CITY, S.D. — South Dakota authorities say a woman found passed out in a stolen delivery van earlier this month registered a blood alcohol content of .708 — nearly nine times the legal limit and a possible record for the state.

Meade County State’s Attorney Jesse Sondreal said Wednesday that 45-year-old Marguerite Engle was found slumped over the van’s steering wheel along a highway on Dec. 1.

He says the highest blood alcohol content state chemists he spoke with could recall was a .56. The state’s legal limit is .08.

Authorities say Engle missed an initial court hearing Dec. 15, but that they found her Monday in another stolen vehicle, and that she had been drinking.

She was being held on two counts of driving under the influence. It wasn’t immediately clear if she was facing other charges.

Her attorney declined comment.

Man assaulted with steak

Steak mugshotDECEMBER 8–Meet Elsie Egan. The Florida woman, 53, is facing a felony domestic abuse charge for allegedly striking her boyfriend several times in the head with a raw steak, according to police. Egan, pictured in the below mug shot, was busted last night after a confrontation in the Dunnellon home she shares with Peter Schabhuttl. The 49-year-old Schabhuttl is described in a Marion County Sheriff’s Office report as disabled and terminally ill with cancer. He told cops that Egan, his live-in girlfriend of 16 years, struck him “on top of his head with an uncooked steak (approximately 10-16 oz.)” after they quarreled about bread to be consumed at dinner. Schabhuttl wanted a roll. Egan, however, wanted him to eat sliced bread. “He said that when he refused, she attacked him with the steak,” reported Deputy Carmen Gallup, who noted observing slight redness on Schabhuttl’s right cheek and the crown of his head. While Egan denied wielding the steak, she admitted slapping Schabhuttl several times “so that he can learn.”
