Actually Columbus left from Palos in Huelva, which is in the Atlantic Coast, no need for the first turn…
Also, no remotely educated person at the time of Columbus actually believed the world was flat. The only way in which he went against established wisdom was in severely under-estimating the circumference of the Earth, which had been calculated with surprising accuracy 1600 years earlier by Eratosthenes.
