I think Governor Sarah Palin did remarkably well in the debate against Senator Joe Biden. There was no meltdown as many hoped for. Yet I’m sure that Tina Fey and the SNL writers are hard at work on a script for this week’s show. I can see it now, “And a shout out to all the children at Wasilla Elementary School.”
I actually thought it was a very good debate. I think Biden did a little better than Palin, but she didn’t do bad.
Just my two cents worth, not that anyone cares.
I think she did what she usually did. Palin is the master of the no-answer. She didn’t answer many of the questions that were asked of her. This is a debate, not a place to spit out talking points over and over. Biden did that but mostly in the context of ANSWERING the question. Palin would get asked about something and she would say something totally not related to the question.
Remarkably well? I don’t think we were watching the same debate.
J:M,
I watched the debate that CNN was showing. A politician not answering a question that was asked? Can you be serious? They ALL ALMOST ALWAYS do that. I was expecting a major nonsensical blabbering from Palin and I didn’t see that. And I’m glad for her that it didn’t happen.
Did I think she answered all the questions? NO
Did I agree with most of her comments? NO
Do I think she WON the debate? NO
I just think she did better than most people thought she would.
With the bar set as low as it was, and many people expecting “major nonsensical blabbering”, it’s really hard *not* to have done better than that… with such LOW expectations.
I agree with J:M. She didn’t answer many of the questions asked of her, and resorted to the same talking points as ever prompting many comments on various sites to imply it would have been a great drinking game “debate”.
Well, from a conservative view-point, I think she did just fine: especially when she kicked Senator Biden in the nutz on the opening inquiery. She admitted her lack of knowledge in area’s where none of us are experts, nor these nimrods running for the office have. Just wish to heck she’d of gotten off the “hockey Mom” thing.

“Palin holds her own against Master (De)bater”
It was his pleasure being there while she was holding her own against him.
Hilarious!
I agree Jonco, I think Biden dodged just as many questions as Palin did.
Anyone else happen to think the little Analyst scorecard things were really stupid? some of them would rack up + points for a candidate while the other was speaking.
SARAH PALIN’S 18 LIES TONIGHT
1. FANNIE MAE/FREDDIE MAC: Palin said “it was John McCain who pushed so hard with the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac reform measures,” but fact checkers say that’s “Quite A Stretch” And “Barely True,” and that McCain was a “latecomer” to the discussion.
2. FUNDAMENTALS ARE STRONG: Palin tried to say “John McCain saying our economy was strong” but McCain has used the phrase “The Fundamentals Of The Economy Are Strong” At Least 16 Times This Year.
3. PARTISAN POLITICS: Palin said McCain is “known for putting partisan politics aside to just get the job done,” but he has voted with Bush 90% of the time in the Senate and bragged about his support for Bush on important issues.
4. TAXES ATTACK: Palin repeated the attack that Obama voted for higher taxes 94 times, which the New York Times says is “false,” CNN says is “Misleading,” and FactCheck.org says is “inflated.”
5. TOBACCO REGULATION: Palin said to “look at the tobacco industry” as an example of McCain pushing for even harder and tougher regulations. But McCain opposed expanding the SCHIP children’s health insurance program for 5.8 million children because it would increase tobacco taxes.
6. SPENDING INCREASES: Palin said Obama is is proposing “nearly a trillion dollars in new spending,” but didn’t mention that he has also proposed cuts to balance it out, an attack CNN has already debunked as “misleading” and that ignores the far larger cost of McCain’s tax cuts and spending hikes.
7. HEALTH CARE: Palin claimed Obama’s health plan is “government run” which has been widely debunked as a “canard.”
8. HEALTH CARE. Palin says taxes wouldn’t go up under the McCain health care plan, a fact even his own campaign has acknowledged isn’t true.
9. TROOPS: Palin repeated what the AP called the “highly misleading” attack that Obama opposed funding for the troops, and Factcheck.org notes that the same methodology would lead to the same conclusion for McCain.
10. GLOBAL WARMING: Palin said “I don’t want to argue about the causes” for global warming, when she has clearly taken the position that she doesn’t not believe it is man-made.
11. MCCAIN IS CONSISTENT: Palin said McCain” doesn’t tell one thing to one group and then turns around and tells something else to another group,” when that is exactly what he has done on immigration, telling Hispanic leaders he was for comprehensive reform instead of the enforcement focused approach he has taken with conservatives.
12. MCCLELLAN NOT MCKIERNAN: Palin referred to the US commander in Afghanistan, David McKiernan as “McClellan.”
13. MCKIERNAN ON “SURGE:” Palin said that [McKiernan] did not say a surge wouldn’t work in Afghanistan, when just yesterday he said “The word I don’t use for Afghanistan is ’surge,’ ” McKiernan stressed, saying that what is required is a “sustained commitment” to a counterinsurgency effort that could last many years and would ultimately require a political, not military, solution
14. KILLING CIVILIANS. Palin said “Obama had said that all we’re doing in Afghanistan is air raiding villages and killing civilians and such a reckless, reckless comment and untrue comment again hurts our cause. That’s not what we are doing there.” Unfortunately, the Associated Press says that Obama was right in discussing a critically important point about avoiding civilian casualties.
15. TEACHING: Palin said we need to make sure “that education in either one of our agendas, I think, absolute top of the line,” when McCain has repeatedly favored tax cuts for the wealthy over funds for more teachers and class size reduction.
16. PARTISAN APPOINTMENTS: Palin said “You do what I did as governor. And you appoint people regardless of party affiliation. Democrats, independents, Republicans, you walk the walk, don’t just talk the talk” when she repeatedly appointed friends and supporters to positions for which they weren’t qualified.
17. FOCUS ON CLIMATE CHANGE: Palin falsely claimed that she was the first governor to form a climate change subcabinet, when at least 28 states had already taken action.
18. DARFUR DIVESTMENT: Palin claimed that “when I and others” found out that the state had money invested in Sudan that “we called for divestment,” when the reality is that Palin’s appointees worked to kill a Darfur divestment plan.
media_lush, I think I love you.
To even out the field:
Joe Biden’s 14 lies tonight
1. TAX VOTE: Biden said McCain voted “the exact same way” as Obama to increase taxes on Americans earning just $42,000, but McCain DID NOT VOTE THAT WAY.
2. AHMEDINIJAD MEETING: Joe Biden lied when he said that Barack Obama never said that he would sit down unconditionally with Mahmoud Ahmedinijad of Iran. Barack Obama did say specifically, and Joe Biden attacked him for it.
3. OFFSHORE OIL DRILLING: Biden said, “Drill we must.” But Biden has opposed offshore drilling and even compared offshore drilling to “raping” the Outer Continental Shelf.”
4. TROOP FUNDING: Joe Biden lied when he indicated that John McCain and Barack Obama voted the same way against funding the troops in the field. John McCain opposed a bill that included a timeline, that the President of the United States had already said he would veto regardless of it’s passage.
5. OPPOSING CLEAN COAL: Biden says he’s always been for clean coal, but he just told a voter that he is against clean coal and any new coal plants in America and has a record of voting against clean coal and coal in the U.S. Senate.
6. ALERNATIVE ENERGY VOTES: According to FactCheck.org, Biden is exaggerating and overstating John McCain’s record voting for alternative energy when he says he voted against it 23 times.
7. HEALTH INSURANCE: Biden falsely said McCain will raise taxes on people’s health insurance coverage — they get a tax credit to offset any tax hike. Independent fact checkers have confirmed this attack is false
8. OIL TAXES: Biden falsely said Palin supported a windfall profits tax in Alaska — she reformed the state tax and revenue system, it’s not a windfall profits tax.
9. AFGHANISTAN / GEN. MCKIERNAN COMMENTS: Biden said that top military commander in Iraq said the principles of the surge could not be applied to Afghanistan, but the commander of NATO’s International Security Assistance Force Gen. David D. McKiernan said that there were principles of the surge strategy, including working with tribes, that could be applied in Afghanistan.
10. REGULATION: Biden falsely said McCain weakened regulation — he actually called for more regulation on Fannie and Freddie.
11. IRAQ: When Joe Biden lied when he said that John McCain was “dead wrong on Iraq”, because Joe Biden shared the same vote to authorize the war and differed on the surge strategy where they John McCain has been proven right.
12. TAX INCREASES: Biden said Americans earning less than $250,000 wouldn’t see higher taxes, but the Obama-Biden tax plan would raise taxes on individuals making $200,000 or more.
13. BAILOUT: Biden said the economic rescue legislation matches the four principles that Obama laid out, but in reality it doesn’t meet two of the four principles that Obama outlined on Sept. 19, which were that it include an emergency economic stimulus package, and that it be part of “part of a globally coordinated effort with our partners in the G-20.”
14. REAGAN TAX RATES: Biden is wrong in saying that under Obama, Americans won’t pay any more in taxes then they did under Reagan.
With both sides committing pretty much the same amount of mistakes and factual errors, are Americans once again faced with choosing the lesser of 2 evils here?
I didn’t particularly like the way Palin talked. She did sound like she was running for the school board’s VP position like an analyst said.
That is not the way a President should speak. Come on. This is going to be the leader of the free world! If this is the very best we can produce, then what does that tell about the US?
@ Sarah “Gee Golly Don’tcha Know” Palin
My friends and I did play the Palin Debate Drinking Game. Keywords were Alaska, Energy, Oil, Maverick, etc.
I woke up this morning with a hangover.

I didn’t watch the debate itself but heard about it on the news. I think both parties were confident but I think Palin is using her “I am a typical hockey mom,” technique to relate to people a little too much. Other than that, I hear it was a good debate.
Don’t talk to loud, David (the unsubscriber) might hear….
@ Duuude
I completely agree that she didn’t speak the way a vp candidate should. the winking and the shout-out? I was a bit let down that she didn’t lick her lips seductively, too.
she kept spitting out the same basic remarks instead of really answering the questions, but hey at least she didn’t flat out say (again) ‘I don’t know- I’ll get back to ya!’
I’m totally playing a drinking game for the next debate!
I take issue with the title here. Clearly Sarah Palin is the Master Debater, not Biden. Had you been to this website and looked at the picture, you would know this already.

Joe missed a tremendous opportunity, he never mentioned anything about how the economic crisis reminds him of FDR’s comments on the Cuban Missile Crisis or his use of the internet to speak directly to the American people.
Just a question, shouldn’t he actually have to read the Constitution before he raises his hand and swears to uphold it? I guess they don’t cover the Constitution at the Syracuse University College of Law. They probably focus on “community organizing”.
PHONY AS A 3 DOLLAR BILL
BIDEN: Can I respond? Look, all you have to do is go down Union Street with me in Wilmington or go to Katie’s Restaurant or walk into Home Depot with me where I spend a lot of time and you ask anybody in there whether or not the economic and foreign policy of this administration has made them better off in the last eight years. And then ask them whether there’s a single major initiative that John McCain differs with the president on. On taxes, on Iraq, on Afghanistan, on the whole question of how to help education, on the dealing with health care.
Look, the people in my neighborhood, they get it. They get it. They know they’ve been getting the short end of the stick. So walk with me in my neighborhood, go back to my old neighborhood in Claymont, an old steel town or go up to Scranton with me. These people know the middle class has gotten the short end. The wealthy have done very well. Corporate America has been rewarded. It’s time we change it. Barack Obama will change it.
Katie’s Restaurant went out of business during the Clinton administration. Anyone seen Joe at Home Depot?
I find it pretty funny people making fun of how Governor Palin talks, while the VP candidate they support has been termed by many “the gaffe machine”. He’s had so many slip ups, contradictions, and just plain stupid remarks throughout his 30 (approx.) years in politics. I also find it funny how NOW a politician is criticized for trying really hard to portray how they are just like the every day “main street” person, when I’m pretty sure that’s what every presidential candidate in the last century has tried to portray. Obama thrives on showing how rich, elite, and far removed McCain is from main street (aka, Obama is much more like us than McCain). Now we have Palin…she actually is much more like us than any other of the candidates. Like it or hate it, good or bad thing…it’s true. I simply think its stupid that now that’s a bad thing, when it was a huge selling point for Obama before. And at the end of the day, Palin is probably a hundred times more rich and powerful than any of us screwing around on the internet will ever be. She would also debate the crap out of any of us yahoos. Like or hate any of the candidates, they deserve our respect (you know…to some level).
Hahahahaha…
but seriously.
I could debate Palin into the ground. If she’s the “average” American, we need to raise the bar. She hasn’t sat on the PTA or been to a hockey game for her NOW-IN-THE-MILITARY-son in atleast 5 years. She treats her daughter like she doesn’t exist (omg you got knocked up!) yet mentions her “special needs” baby and her Iraqi boy at every opportunity.
I played Palin Bingo last night and I blacked out my entire card. That’s how predictable and full of taglines this woman is. She truly thinks that her “executive” experience qualifies her for a VP spot. I met plenty of “executives” when I worked at JC Penny. When I worked for JP Morgan and even now that I work for the Board of Ed, none of which would . She’s a catchphrase candidate (I know, they all are, right?) and I’m not buying it for a second.

Look at what they do, not what they say. Education will make your choice easier.
Fact is, I’m pro-choice (because rape and molestation are not “excuses” they are crimes), I think homosexuals deserve COURTHOUSE (non-religious) marriages like everyone else including all the health and legal adoption, visitation and funeral rights that ALL Americans are supposed to have. I think no one’s interpretation of a thrice-translated religious book should OVERRIDE the basic fundamental rights of the US Constitution, and until McCain and Palin show me that they can set aside their religious bias and accept the faiths or non-faiths of others, then they will not have my vote.
Obama and Biden have their faults, but they are nowhere as dangerous, imo, as a McCain/Palin ticket.

Quoting Media_lush “10. GLOBAL WARMING: Palin said “I don’t want to argue about the causes” for global warming, when she has clearly taken the position that she doesn’t not believe it is man-made.”
Where’s the lie? She didn’t lie, she stated that she doesn’t believe that global warming is man made. That’s the truth of what she believes.
I don’t believe global warming is man made either. It’s a natural cycle of the planet. There was an ice age at one time. If global temperature didn’t change, we would still be in an ice age.
@DJ
Drudge? That is like making a Huffington Post poll. Bias.
Oh, and anthropogenic global warming is a reality. Most scientists agree. The people that study climate agree. Don’t be fools.
Sometimes the best advice to follow is your own. Don’t be a fool. Do some research yourself instead of falling for political rhetoric about man made global warming. It’s a hoax. The planet isn’t even getting warmer. Antarctica is actually getting colder, right now, according to temperature readings taken over the last 40 years. This is not a made up statistic, it’s fact. Look it up.
And so-called scientists that “agree with anthropogenic global warming” do so only so that they don’t lose their funding. Duh.
Before you begin to reply, do some research yourself. Go at it with an unbiased attitude. The facts are there.
OMG someone understands gobal warming… K this is the biggest pile of crap Pope Al Gore has ever come up with and hes saying “suckers” all the way to the bank, what about last winter it snowed in Iraq for the first time is recorded history the world will see in a few years the truth to this bs
Reader…I know – the other guy used CNN & MSNBC polls, so I was just countering those biased sites.
Ugh talking about politics make me want to castrate myself. I only want to speak of issues with the poster(s) that said this:
“14. REAGAN TAX RATES: Biden is wrong in saying that under Obama, Americans won’t pay any more in taxes then they did under Reagan.”
Uhhhhh, how can you be wrong about something that hasn’t happened yet?
and:
“10. GLOBAL WARMING: Palin said “I don’t want to argue about the causes” for global warming, when she has clearly taken the position that she doesn’t not believe it is man-made.”
I doesn’t not understand that.
I think.
