What racists never see is the Voting Rights Act was a way of extending the equal protection of the laws guaranteed by the 14th Amendment. The excuse the six extremist conservatives on the Court circumvents the actual rationale behind the creation of that law. To them, equal protection only refers to those who are white.
This racism began when Reagan opened his first campaign with a speech in Philadelphia, MS with a states’ rights speech. The dog whistle was clearly heard by other racists. Voting Republican was the best way to deal with “those other people”.
Ever since, the GOP has been working toward denying equal rights to people of color.
This is what many racists know to be true, but are unwilling to admit, hence they be seen as the pariahs that they are. They know this, hence they twist the SCOTUS decision like a pretzel to sound like it was fair and correct decision.
