A bargain–but again, they could not handle many complications at childbirth back then while we have the NICU and other ways to help a new baby survive.
My firstborn’s hospital bill was $350 for a three day stay in a small hospital (gone now) in 1969. The second in 1970 in a larger (Now a big system of hospitals) was $1500 for three days.
For $1500 now one would have to give birth in the emergency waiting room. Diaper extra.

was curious, so I googled:
“Homeopathic hospitals were part of a movement that gained prominence in the 19th century as a gentle alternative to the often dangerous conventional medicine of the time. They were established across Europe and the United States before their decline in the early 20th century due to growing scientific skepticism and reforms in medical education”
Homeopathy = the Air Guitar of Medicine
I was born in the UK, which meant no bill to pay.
My Mother said that if she’d had to pay anything I would have been put up for sale to cover the cost.
That’s about $809.00 in today’s money.
