I don’t put much blame on the driver. The stupidest is whoever under-designed that canopy so that is wouldn’t hold up after a minor collision like that. Also, without posts on the outside corners drivers with over-sized vehicles don’t always know what might be too close. Good thing no other cars were under that.
I’m not a licensed architect, but I have taken enough architectural classes and have an architectural degree and know different types of structures require different designs for different loads. A drive-thru should be designed for stresses like this. Ask any architect, and I bet he’d agree a drive-thru canopy should not fail in this sort of collision. I wouldn’t hire this builder/designer for my drive-thru. Typical modern cheap construction. Psychologically, people should expect their bank to be built like Fort Knox. This was built like a sand castle.
