Just to fill you in on some progress in restoring Bad Bits, I’m setting up hosting at Dreamhost. I’ve got that started and will hopefully be back up and running soon. I may end up having to start over with new posts. I’m not sure if I can resurrect what was previously there (I did make an ftp) copy of the files before I canceled service). But I’m not smart enough to know if that will just reload to the new host or if I’ll have to start over. Not too big of a deal either way.
Anyway, I did want you all to know that I’m working on it and hopefully it’ll be back online soon.
Yaay Bad Bits!
Yaay Jonco! Yaay Maffu!
Thanks ! I love this new site of yours, adds a little spice at the end of my day 🙂
Unless you backed up the mySQL database, the posts are lost
Don’t forget you have fans. Don’t be shy about asking for help.
Good show.
Steve
It’s an EASTER BUNNY Miracle !!!!! yaa hooo
Yippee !!
All I can say is “Yay!”
Your doing a wonderful job, and I’ve been following you for a long time. keep up the good work!
Cool mate ,i was enjoying that other side .
We have experienced similar problems in Portugal: one of the best sites we have, http://afundasao.blogspot.com, has been suffering boycotts since it started in 2003, first with the national domain, “Sapo”, where the images were located – they’ve “lost” the pictures, in spite of the service has been paid; then Blogger created an adults content warning – the site had its own, beautifully designed; with the Blogger warning many functionalities, such as the possibility of search for images, texts and poems (the real treasure of the site) by all the known search engines, have been lost. Recently, in less than one year, the site has been closed twice, with the excuse of violating the terms of service for suspicion of illegal add-ons: both have been proved to be false alarms. This kind of censorship, with the excuse of technical problems, is not an exclusive of the US, believe me! Best regards, I hope to be able to visit Bad Bits again, asap!
Don’t forget to use the export tool (Tools > Export) of WordPress (WP) to backup posts, comments, user accounts etc. (This data is not accessible via FTP.) And ofcourse use FTP to backup all images, and the WordPress files and templates.
If you want to make extra WordPress backups, then also make a backup of the database of WP by using direct database access tools provided by the old webhost, such as PHPMyAdmin.
“Not too big of a deal either way.”
In terms of Search Engine Optimalization (SEO), it can make a big difference. You might loss new visitors, when Google drops the lost pages from Search Engine Result Pages.
Joe,
I think it’s too late on backing up the database, but I’ll check. ( I wasn’t aware of that being necessary.)
By saying “not that big of a deal”, I meant that the site was only active a few weeks and I do have all the pictures. I will probably lose the comments though.
I believe dreamhost also offer a service where they will do the import /export of your old database to this one.
If not, I would be happy to do it for you if you need it.
A word of caution – don’t use the “One Click Install” option for wordpress that is in the Dreamhost Control Panel.
If you do, you won’t be able to use your own templates.
Oh, and “Yay!”
@DJ – not yay maffu. (I don’t think Jonco used my link. Or at least it hasn’t registered yet.)
If they ask you for a referrer Jonco (and if you want to pay for my weekend beer) my gmail addy is maffu.gm@
here is a pix of hot chicks to help rebuild your data base.
Maffu deserves a beer. He looks thirsty.
Damn – I thought I’d turned that webcam off. Sorry Bella, I’ll put some clothes on.
It’s showing you as a referrer now Jonco cheers – I think I’ll have to wait a bit for my beer tokens to show up though 😀
Maffu – actually on the 1 click installs, if you use the Easy mode you can’t, but if you use the advance mood, you can add your own themes (like I have been doing on my blog).
I stand corrected
😀
PS – Books and food… I like.
Wow! Free beer! ROAD TRIP! FLASH MOB! Everybody over to Maffu’s place!!
If you can make it over here DJ you definitely get a free beer.*
*The pub closes around 1am though so get your skates on.
Striske, I’m with Maffu, I like the books, food combination.
@Jonco,
To backup all posts (excl images) and comments, you need to do either: or use the WP export option, or backup the complete database using database access tools, or both for extra safety/backups.
I’m not sure if you’re doing a domain transfer, or changing from webhost or both. A domain transfer is usually not needed.
Anyway, if you’re in the process of canceling your current old host, it is advisable to export your current WordPress data immediately using: login in WP > go to admin area > tools > export. This is an easy operation, and you should be able to do it right now. (Optionally backing up the database using database access tools can be more difficult.)
i dont know anything about this but can u just put in a tab at the top like BABBQ and not need another web site?
‘International Beaver Day’ was overlooked on B&P today. Maybe next year you can feature it on the new and improved Bad Bits.
