  1. Several years ago didn’t Tom Watson get in trouble when he said he’d serve fried chicken at the Master’s dinner after Tiger won? It was an off-the-cuff comment but it became a huge brouhaha (I love using that word…even more fun when you say it0.

  2. I worked at a college for a few years. The head cook was (and is, since he still works there) black. Guess what he served during black history month with a sign and a note in the school newsletter that looked a lot like the one in that picture. He even used the term “soul food.” It was pretty much a full month of varying foods like fried chicken, ribs, okra, etc, etc…and it was great food.

    So…y’know…perspective…

  3. Can some one please tell me why Americans labeled us Aussies racist for using coloured people in a KFC commercial? But it is OK for you to associate black people with fried chicken. Do you ever see a coloured person in an American KFC commercial? Am I confused or just ignorant?

  4. That menu was the favorite food for Martin Luther King, Jr. How in the heck is it racist?

The p.c. crowd have become idiots.

  5. Jalapeno cornbread? Not around here, Homey.
I’m surprised that they didn’t go all the way and serve watermelon…
Jon – I’m not sure what the heck you are talking about, but yes there are blacks in KFC ads.

  6. Glad to hear it Jonco.. Don’t worry the PC crowd go nuts here as well
By the way love your site always the first thing i check on the net every day

  7. Makes me drool…

Who says this is a black menu… Soul food is southern culture, not black :/

menu makes me miss my granma 🙁

  8. I’m an equal opportunity offender myself, my friends are every race, religion, and sexual orientation you can imagine and they know that’s just the way it it is.

  9. Many people don’t know the history behind “soul food”. Look back at American history a few centuries ago and you’ll understand why food such as pig’s feet and other parts of various animals were part of the African American meal. “Human traffickers” fed their large families, but also had to feed their “inventory”. They were given what “left over” after the “boss” fed his own family the more desireable meals, and they made due with what was given them.

  10. LOL I grew up very very poor so we HAD to eat a lot of beans and potato. As an adult I still love those foods. Point being, regardless of the history of “soul food” it is still very enjoyable meal for those of us who love that type of food.

Whitehat was dead on: Soul food is southern culture, not black :/

  11. I grew up eating a lot of pancakes, collards and pigs feet. Dang, I never knew I was black…I just thought we were poor.

  12. I gotta try all this food when I come down there. Brisket, pulled pork, chittlings, black-eyed peas, grits, jowls, vittles and Champipple (looks like good booze). My Mum used to cook brisket but I don’t think it’s anything like how you eat it. It would take us 2 Sundays to chew thru it. I’m more than willing to try a more tender variety. Southern fried chicken, I’m assuming tastes nothing like KFC. Collard greens sounds yummy as I like swiss chard and spinach so may be something similar? We used to eat pork hocks too and they were tasty but I’ll pass on the pigs feet. Anyways, it all sounds really good and I may need a crane to pull me away from the table by the time I’m all done.

  13. hey Bella Churchs chicken is DAYUM close to real southern chicken, and collards are good but I like mustard greens better and we have to have pepper sauce to put on them and fatback cooked with them,DROOL Im getting hungry

  14. Oh, wait a minute. I can remember someone describing chittlins. Some type of inner guts boiled and stinking for hours? Is that it? I may pass on that one too. DJ outside of a building almost heaving because of stench, with Infi and Richard backing him up. I value my friends judgement. 🙂

  15. Yeah. Good memory. Don’t even say the word in my presence.
Champipple was from the old Sanford and Son tv show back in the 70s. It was a combination of ginger ale and the cheapest wine you could find, called Ripple. Don’t think it’s around anymore.

  16. Because chitlins are intestines, they have to be cleaned with extreme care. They can contain fecal matter, which can translate to ingesting numerous forms of bacteria including E. Coli, yersinia, and salmonella. If chitlins are sold uncooked, they need to be cleaned, and hand picked of any remaining fecal matter. Guides on cooking chitlins often suggest boiling them for 5 minutes to sterilize them prior to preparing them.
    .
I googled them. Hand picked of any fecal matter!!! I think not. Spew. I will pass on those.

  17. A running gag: whenever Lamont threatened to leave or things were not going Fred’s way, he would fake a heart attack and say, “You hear that, Elizabeth? I’m coming to join ya, honey!”

  18. 5 minutes??! Get out! I like my mecal matter well done with no pink.

The house I worked in (for a short time!) had them boiling for hours. Bigass pot, about foot & half around and about foot, foot and a half deep. Lid kept banging up and down, releasing the steamy smell of the contents of an unflushed toilet in a nursing home boiling on used tennis shoe fire.

    Pass the Tums.

  19. LOL DJ. What’s matter? Mat mingers? (fat fingers?)
I ain’t digging no crap outta any food that I eat.
    Paaatuuuie!

  20. Jonco – Yeah, I’m still waiting to find out how that dude got a comment on the BABBQ page without a link…
