You’re just standing out on your balcony and…

Jet

A Navy F/A-18F Super Hornet crew got permission for a low-level demonstration flight, as part of the opening ceremony for a speedboat race on the Detroit River, recently.  This is what it looked like, for Motor City residents.

This is the moment a US Navy pilot gave a shocked resident a very close look at his F/A-18F.  The fighter/bomber streaked past an apartment block on the banks of the Detroit River.  It was part of a tactical demonstration fly-past to open a speedboat race in the North American city.  Officials waived rules to allow the Navy flyers to swoop under 100ft along the waterway.

One resident said, “I couldn’t believe how low they flew and how close they came to our building. I’m sure the pilot waved at me.”

The jets had flown in from the Naval Air Station Oceana  in Virginia Beach, VA to put on a spectacular show for thousands of spectators.

Thanks Gene

  1. Reminds me of back when the Soviet Union was still around–I was looking at a condo on the 42nd-ish floor of Lake Point Towers (a condo building in Chicago on Lake Michigan) during the air and water show. While I was looking out the window at the great view, a squadron of Soviet MiGs flew by. Boy, was I glad I knew the air and water show was happening.

  2. In 1988 the Angels were practicing for the Quad-City air show and I was driving near the airport. To my surprise, I found out two of the pilots were flying knife edge between the light stantions at the abandoned Cat plant across the road. 500 knots and 20 feet above my car resulted in about a 2 foot change in direction.
That was as cool as the air show.
