  1. Think whatever you want, the fact is that it is still a very renowned and respected award in the whole civilized world. Just because they give the prize to people that don’t suit your (American right wing) backwards mindset, it doesn’t make the recipients less worthy.

This isn’t directed at you, Jonco.

  2. I was going to type something pithy about trying to marginalize a large percentage of the population, but why argue with fools and wind up sounding like them?

  3. Who are these experts on the nobel prize?

people who dispute the awarding of the peace prize to Obama are just to damn lazy or dumb to find out what the peace prize is awarded for. Look at some of the recipients throughout the history of the prize and what their contributions were, versus what their efforts had the potential to yield.

Yasser Arafat, Henry Kissenger, Carl Von Ossietsky, Ralph Bunche… The list goes on of people who had the potential to do do great things in the name of peace, but in case you hadn’t noticed, most of it never “panned out”.

Criticize things you know something about. In other words, your ignorance is showing.

    not you Jonco, you’re cool!

  4. Wow, Jonco. It’s an obsequious bunch since you smacked down a fight the other day. Wish I’d seen it so I’d know what it was about.

  5. Rev, I had to look that word up. LOL.
The ruckus over the weekend wasn’t a big deal, but I wanted to do what I could to make sure it didn’t turn into a big deal. It was just a light clash of personalities that had the potential to turn adults into children. If that had happened I’d probably have to post a lot more Twilight and Barney shit here and I wouldn’t have enjoyed that. Not to mention some kids would have been grounded…. but I just did mention it…. Damn!

  6. “people who dispute the awarding of the peace prize to Obama are just to damn lazy or dumb to find out what the peace prize is awarded for.”

From Alfred Nobel’s will, establishing the Peace Prize: The Prize should be awarded “to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity among nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.

  7. Our boys are still coming home in caskets, in my state our unemployment is at a high. Only good he has done is kiss other countries asses. Lets borrow money from this and that country, run that bill up. Wheres the peace? or is it peice? Just my sentiments.

    Gus does deserve one though!

  8. No problem, Jonco, sometimes I throw out a big word like jarfly and cultivator just so folks know we have dictionaripedias down south here.

  9. “The trouble with our liberal friends is not that they’re ignorant; it’s just that they know so much that isn’t so.”

  10. One of the reasons it was difficult for even fair-minded Americans to credit the appropriateness of awarding Obama the Peace Prize this early in his first term is that we are mostly unaware of how just how far down in the world’s eyes Cheney and his puppet had dragged us. Since our “leaders” were blind, arrogant, bullying, no-nothing war criminals who were willing to ride roughshod over anyone or anything in their way, and who had the blood of hundreds of thousands of innocent people on their hands, many in the world had come to see our whole country this way.

World opinion has soared with Obama’s advent, certainly in part because he understands and can brilliantly articulate the 21st century’s problems. But more importantly, he was honored because he has actively reached out to allies that Bush and Cheney had scorned and belittled, and also to other nations around the world in seeking to generate cooperation and good will. And to back up his words, members of his administration have been actively working to address complex problems that the previous administration only saw down the sight of a gun, if they acknowledged them at all.

We Americans may not see much change yet from this extraordinary man, but the world knows that the change is already profound, and is very much of his doing. And that’s why few people in other countries questioned the appropriateness of the award. Yes, it is sickening to see the vicious ignorance and malevolence with which he is attacked by the hate radio mongers and their puppet minions. But, ironically, in the long run even they will benefit greatly from the changes he has brought and is bringing about.

  11. If you can’t sum it up in less then a paragraph acorv its just blah blah blah, alot of words with no punch line. This is BnP not CNN, so be funny or witty or give mad props to Gus, or we hide your soap box.

  12. “The trouble with our liberal friends is not that they’re ignorant; it’s just that they know so much that isn’t so.”

The precedent has been set that the peace prize is customarily awarded to an individual or organization that has taken action regardless of achieving results.

The Olive branch has been handed to many allies of the US who were alienated by the previous administrations unilateral actions and general disregard for a cooperative spirit in moving forward with efforts to create and sustain peace.

Therefor one can argue that this president has “done the most or the best work for fraternity among nations”

  13. What’s a matter, req, too much writing makes your head explode? You’re right, this is BnP, but if you’ve been here any length of time, you should know that on occasion, there are great political discussions that occur. Here’s a web site that may be more suitable for you: http://shortattentionspan.net/

  14. “people who dispute the awarding of the peace prize to Obama are just to damn lazy or dumb to find out what the peace prize is awarded for.”

I think it is just as important to know what it’s not awarded for.

I’m generally considered left of center in my politics but I’m mystified as to how someone with less than a year in office with no clear results in any policies might have been awarded anything for what he’s yet to do.

If is is not awarded for something he’s done, and it was awarded for something that might happen in the future, I would very respectfully suggest that the process is pretty much fuked.

  15. He won the award technically after 11 days in office. I don’t care who you are, in 11 days he did not change the world’s opinion of the US. He did not do a thing to help anyone. He’s so far been the antithesis of what it should embody, but a quick look at past recipients and nominees will show a pretty random assortment of people who deserved it, and people who were monsters (with everything inbetween). The prize these days is handed out for politics, not accomplishment. It’s essentially a massive bribe or political trick and has been for quite awhile.

Not like it matters anyway. I think the people are more than capable of deciding what kind of man Obama is. Those poll numbers are a fallin’, after all.

  16. “Drinking the kool-aid” = Paying attention, and thinking for oneself.

“He won the award technically after 11 days in office.” Wrong, and willfully so, since this idiotic “point” was demolished as soon as Fox et al started bleating it. The nominations were due after his first 11 days, but the decision was made in the fall, after much had been done. Are you actively seeking to demonstrate how smugly misinformed is the right wing?

“If you can’t sum it up in less then a paragraph its just blah blah blah, a lot of words with no punch line.” This thinking is tough, isn’t it? Don’t worry, Rush and Sean and Sarah will tell you what your opinions are tomorrow.

  17. DJ sounds like the ultimate right wing denialist. Deny, deny, deny… hey it worked for OJ, finally the republican party has a plan that just might work! Don’t forget to deny the theory of evolution. Oh, and climate change too.

  18. I guess I’ve proven many times that I don’t understand things around here, but we’ll add another to the list. I don’t understand this rabid fervor for a such blank slate.
I’ve seen many statements such as “foreign goverments recognize his greatness,” “his thought processes are profound,” and “his accomplishments are myriad.” Who says this? “Everyone that meets him” is not a valid answer. Specifically which foreign dignitaries have waxxed poetically as you do? Is he a gifted orator, a talented thespian? Perhaps. Where within a press conference or an unscripted meeting has there been an off-the-cuff remark that has dazzled us with truth, dignity, awe, and reverence? Where are the friends from college and childhood stepping out and saying “we always knew he was destined for greatness.” Where are the co-workers from the Law Review or jobs that speak of his insight and world-view?
These are valid questions that aren’t answered by saying “go back to Fox/Hannity/et al” or shouting “yeah, but what about Bush/Cheney.”
We are a nation of potential, a nation of vision and power. But we’re also a curious nation with our own voices. We respond to reason, not vitriol.

  19. So according to Acorvid, Prezbo was awarded the Nobel as a repudiation of Cheney and Bush. Now I understand how Owlgore got his award. It must have been a repudiation of Slick Willie.

  20. I think it’s about time that the American right wing realizes that they are an ideological minority in the civilized world.

Please just inform yourselves without the flag (Stars and Stripes, Confederate, whatever) covering your eyes and maybe the rest of the world will welcome you to reality and the real problems in the world.

There are bigger problems in the world than a “socialist” winning a Nobel prize.
