I just got off the phone with my ISP. It seems a post I made there has gotten over 30,000 hits today and it’s overwhelming their servers. So they took BOW down and are migrating it to a different server. This could take up to 24 hours. The post has been getting over 10,000 hits a day for a few days.
I know the post (Perception) was popular because of all the comments it was generating. I just didn’t realize it was that popular. It’s a YouTube video of one of the nations best musicians, a violinist who is playing music at the train station in Washington D.C. at rush hour. It’s an experiment about the reaction passerbys have to the music.
This is the video that caused all the trouble.
Update:
BOW is now back online. And I was mistaken, there wasn’t even a video there. It was just a story about this guy and the experiment. Somebody big must have picked this up. I’m not sure what to do about it though. If the traffic continues they’ll take me down again and make me get a dedicated server. I might have to delete the post. It would be one thing if I was doing that traffic every day, but I’m averaging 7,000 – 8,000 600-700 hits a day until this thing hit. Yesterday it got 29,250 and so far today we’re at 31,125. I guess I’ll just have to watch it and see what it does the next few days. I have 30 days to “fix it”.
Well, I guess congratulations are in order. BoW has hit the bigtime already!
And that was a submission by That Gene Dude. He’s a great father, an intelligent, generous, even-handed, open-minded man, a great father, a spectacular husband (note to self: fact check that one), and it seems likely he was born in (or near) America. Everyone he meets, literally EVERYONE, in this country, around the world, and throughout the entire space/time continuum comes away impressed with his insight, his gaping-open-mind, and his, umm, great fatherness. This is one freaking extraordinary man. I am humbled to have met him and shared a waitress with him (NO–not like Ted Kennedy and Chris Dodd did! Sheesh!!) Congrats to him on winning the World Series in 3 games.
Of course I would hae stopped to listen to the magnificent performance but I can understand that people going to work at rush hour in a busy subway don’t have the luxury of missing a train and being late to work. I am surprised that no one even seemed to pause and look. Drawing conclusions from this experiment is tricky.
BOW wow!
Two things we should keep in mind: That Gene Dude is a great father and something about an inchworm.
I think that other sites are linking back to yours as the source for the video, which is probably why you are garnering so many hits.
I know I heard from three random friends about the video, all from different sources, so it definitely is out there… I just wonder if many of them point back to you.
Change hosts. That’s out of order.
How do you DO that with a brand new site? You are the MASTER!
LOL @ Miss C. Master? Hardly!
I’m amazed at the 7,000 daily pageviews, let alone the big surge the last few days. But with having THIS site to push that one sure helped get it started. It took a long time for B&P to get to the 7,000 mark. I’ve never really promoted B&P. The only thing I’ve done is to create a couple dozen T-Shirts and I made some business cards which I basically distributed to local friends and acquaintances. I’ve NEVER asked anyone to exchange links, it just sort of happened. I’m always getting requests from people to exchange links. And I have on just a few occasions when our sites were similar. But I get the exchange links requests from people who are selling real estate or weight loss products. I’m not going to put their links in my blogroll. I only link to sites that I get stuff from. And for the most part I try not to link to sites that don’t list their sources. (There are a few exceptions)
Anyway, didn’t mean to go on and on about it… but to answer your question… I don’t know. I guess my warped sense of humor agrees with a lot of people. Well, most of the time anyway. (There are exceptions here too)
I’m getting to the point that I need the ad revenues so I might start promoting it. I have no idea how to do that. Life moves on. ….
First rule of busking is to play a song people know. If he had played something from “The Four Seasons or “Für Elise” he might have had more attention.
By the way, I heard 2 buskers totally faking it the other day. They didn’t know the words to a Dylan song. Played with 4 chords and 4 words. “Knock, knock, knockin on heavens door”… repeat, and repeat again.
Congrats!
If you choose to take the post down, you may be able to find another source for the story to link to. I remember hearing about the violinist’s experiment on NPR back when he did it, so I’m sure there are a number of other sources for it online by now.
Way to go, Jonco! I hope the hits keep on coming!
Sue Dunham – that reminds me of listening to some hack sing “Proud Mary” on the Metro in Paris. He only sang the first verse, and he is the only one who pronounced the “g” in “rolling down the river.” I have heard many people sing this song–Ike & Tina Turner, CCR, Lenard Nemoy, and a local group while in Cincinnati–but all of them sang “rollin’ down the river”–and that is the way the song should be sung. The guy on the Metro got no tip from me.
That posting was featured on the main page for the popular website recommender, StumbleUpon.com. That may be why it got so many hits in the one day.
YOU WANT ME TO BREAK SOME LEGS JON..
I’ll let you know Joe. Stay tuned.
