Sunday ride to Pioneer’s Cabin

Bike ride2We took a 225 mile ride today that took us from St. Louis to a little town called Percy Illinois to a restaurant called Pioneer’s Cabin.  It seemed to take forever to get there but we traveled on some really pretty Southern Illinois roads once we crossed the Mississippi River at Chester IL.  We were sure hungry by the time we got there.  They have a regular menu, but it seems that most people go there for their special: Fried chicken, Ham and chicken and dumplings with mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, corn, applesauce and fresh baked bread (baked in clay pots) all served country style on big platters and bowls.  It’s all you can eat …. and we ate all we could.  $10.59 and they serve your drinks in 32 oz Mason jars.

Then we headed on up highway 4 back towards St. Louis. As is our luck we hit the “very slight possibility” or rain and thunder and lightning. I had been listening to the Cardinal baseball game as we rode up the highway and they delayed the game because of rain.  I kept looking in the direction of St. Louis and all I could see was sunny.  I didn’t think we were that far away that I couldn’t see a storm brewing.

Anyway, we pulled over and donned our rain gear and rode through most of the storm.  We did pull over under an overpass for a little while during one part.  It didn’t last too long and we were back on th road.  The skies looked threatening the rest of the ride, but it didn’t do much after that.

  1. Riding in the rain sucks, doesn’t it? Riding in the rain when it’s cold out sucks even worse, so hopefully you weren’t chilled on top of being wet.

    • Actually the rain and clouds brought some needed relief from the heat…. but the rain part really sucks. I used to be terrified of riding in the rain, but I’ve done so much of it I’m not so afraid of it, I just don’t like it.

  2. Oh yeah Debbers. I’m all over that!

It’s a good place to get out of the rain when you’re on a motorcycle, tho. But if you see an old lady on a bicycle with a dog in a basket flying by, you may want to go to Plan B.

  3. I like the grin on the fellow under the “No Parking” sign. He looks like my buddy who we call ” Captain Highliner ” as in the fish sticks. Just needs a bit of a beard.

  4. Pioneers Cabin is a family favorite. We go there for birthdays, Mothers/Fathers day, my-dog-didn’t-pee-on-the-carpet-this-week day, any excuse we can come up with is a reason to go.

Last time we went was mothers day and there was 38 of us there. The food is good, service is great and where else can you buy a wooden rubber band gun to shoot your co-workers with?

How the heck you find it anyways in such a tiny, podunk town?

    • Someone told one of the people in our group about the place so we looked it up and it’s an easy day trip. We’re always looking for good day rides from St. Louis…especially where we can find a good and/or interesting meal along the way.

  5. Been to Pioneer cabin a few time. We really need to hook up for a ride sometimes. We had a group run down Bluff road to Chester. For all I know, our groups passed each other.

I got douched about at the Herky exit on the way home. Was a great day for a ride.
