Ana is coming!… and I’m going!

Tropical storm Ana, the first named storm of the season, is heading towards Florida.  Guess who’s going to Florida on Wednesday?  Yep, I’ll be there from Wednesday until Sunday.  I’m going to spend a couple days with my aunt and a couple days in St. Pete.  Here is Ana’s projected path.

Ana

I was in Florida during what was called “The Storm of the Century” in 1993.  It wasn’t a hurricane but it had 90 MPH winds for a 24 hour period. It went up the entire easter coast of the U.S.  Some areas got up to 16 inches of rain from the storm.  A large piece of the roof blew off of our hotel and landed on some cars in the parking lot.  I saw newspaper boxes rolling down the street being pushed by the strong winds.  We walked out onto the beach and were sandblasted as we had to lean into the wind to keep from being blown away.  It was something to experience.

  1. Actually, the worst storm in Florida was Hurricane Andrew in 1992. I was part of the emergency restoration team for BellSouth Communications, so I got to see a lot of the damage up close. It was an awesome scene from the air, seeing all of the trees laid out in the same direction, high rise office buildings with all of the windows gone and hugh yachts scattered in parking lots blocks from the water. The storm track stayed just south of Miami, doing the most damage to Kendall and Homestead. Just a few miles north and the effects would have catastrophic. Just hope that this storm makes its turn early.

  2. Great advice, Deb! Yeah Jonco, set that new cam up and take some time lapse from Aunt Iva’s bathroom window!!
Good luck to everybody down that way in Florida and south Georgia, including P in B and 87 year old Mom J, who is on the beach and flipping the bird to the southeast right now!

  3. bring it on !! im in a construction related trade in central fl charlie was a slight breeze compared to andrew

  4. To DJ and the other non hurricane experienced, I think I speak for my fellow south Floridians, and probably Floridians in general when I say thanks for your concern, it’s really appreciated. One thing we have learned is that predictions 4 or 5 days out like t*ts on a bull: pretty much worthless. As I went to sleep last night it looked like we could expect some action. This morning, gee, surprise, things seemed to have changed. For anyone curious on tracking these things, if you haven’t visited http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/, it might be worth a look.

  5. Thank my Mom, PinB. She gets out there and threatens and scares and cusses the damn things away from Florida’s East Coast. She’s about 60 miles north of you. She sends em to Cuba.

  6. We Floridians know “Ana” would be a non-event… If it even hit’s us, it will only be a rain event… MOST storms do nothing but yet we do watch out for the big storm with land strike probalities within 2-3 days of actual land fall. Tropical storms and depressions just don’t warrant any real attention.
