The Presurfer posted about this today. I’ve lived in this area for sixty years and the weekend before last was the first time I ever went there. It’s less than an hour from my house. A very interesting place.
Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site is the site of an ancient Native American city (650–1400 CE) near Collinsville, Illinois in the American Bottom floodplain, across the Mississippi River from St. Louis, Missouri. The 2,200-acre site included 120 man-made earthen mounds over an area of six square miles. Cahokia was larger than London was in AD 1250.
Cahokia Mounds is the largest archaeological site related to the Mississippian culture, which developed advanced societies in eastern North America centuries before the arrival of Europeans.
The view from the East side is almost biblical….I love to come home from a trip and see the arch
That is really interesting. The web site for it is great!
Man, I lived there for two years in the seventies and I went there with my girlfriend several times. But I understand. I lived in DC for two years and never went to the capital, white house or the monuments. Doh!!
Went to Belleville East High School.
This was a very advanced civilization. To this day no one knows how they built the Arch with just rocks and sand.
St. Louis was also known as mound city – In the early days there were many mounds on the Missouri side. As the city grew mounds were razed to make way for new buildings – There was no excavation or mapping of the sites – That is all but forgotten now.
I’ll wait til they discover almond joys.
