I can’t believe there limiting this to people 12-20. I’d expand they’re survey to 12->infinity.
Reminds me of the same people who can’t keep straight the difference between “you’re” and “your”. More understandable is “then” vs. “than”.
Effect and affect
to, two and too
Like people who don’t know that ‘of’ never follows ‘could’. ‘Could’ is only followed by verbs. Thus it is ‘could have’ or ‘could’ve’ not ‘could of’. I’ve seen so-called “professional” writers make that mistake.
Crispy – This time you beat me…That’s a real hangup of mine. I’ve seen that more lately than to too two.
Crispy,
Thank you.
I never know when to use WIHI or WIFI.
I don’t never do them things, I could of, but I ain’t.
Give me 50 more years and I’ll tell you how pathetic some native speakers will be.
This sort of brings back memories of my old mom who used alwasy promote books. Well, perhaps that could help supposing we can read… 😉
Michael, your mom was a wise woman. My parents did not encourage reading, but fortunately I developed a love of books anyway. I enjoy coming here, getting my online news updates, and watching baseball and jeopardy on TV, but nothing satisfies
like reading. I would encourage anyone and everyone to read, more importantly, develop a love for reading, and(if you have them) read to and with your kids .
In sixth grade I had a great english teacher, he was a fun guy, and made learning
the intricacies of the english language, if not fun, at least interesting. I still have holes in my foundation i.e…sentence structure, grammar, and punctuation, but because I continue to read, I continue to learn and improve.
What made this man a standout to me, was that each day after lunch he would get out his copy of Old Yeller, and would read a chapter. When he finished Old Yeller, he would start Savage Sam, and next, Where the Red Fern Grows. After each chapter we would have a brief discussion about what we had just heard. I looked forward to that class every day, and missed it when the year ended.
I honor Mr Floyd Mayo. A fine teacher and a fine man.
