  1. I find the 2001 picture heartbreaking. That woman’s on the edge of collapse and in some serious pain. By 2004, obviously her troubles are far worse, but there’s a hardness in her expression that’s just not there in 2001. It’s a pity life does that to us sometimes. Maybe the worst is that in 2001 there’s still some tiny glimmer of hope that’s all but gone by 2004, that ‘Maybe this is all just a bad dream’ look that by 2004 has been replaced with the realization that, bad dream or not, it’s not getting any better anytime soon.

  2. It’s not what life does to us. People who make the decision to get involved with drugs have to be held responsible. Why would you pity that? It’s a an incredibly poor and selfish decision. My cousin’s fiance is in prison because he was making, selling, and doing meth. She moved back home after losing her house and filing for bankruptcy before the age of 24. That was a dick move on his part.

  3. Meth addicts are so distinctive in appearance that cops can easily i.d. them in traffic stops and then it’s off to jail. There are web sites where local law enforcement posts mug shots of the previous days arrests. It is amazing how easy it is to pick out the meth addicts and surprisingly, the shop lifters.
gwinnett.ga.scanamerica.us/index.php is one here in the Atlanta suburbs.

  4. Well, I feel sorry for a meth addict because, from what I understand, it only takes one time to make a person an addict, which is different from most drugs, and when I was young, I tried alcohol before I was “old enough” and I tried marijuana a few times, and if either of those had been methamphetamine, I’d have been in the same shoes those women are in – and I’d have been dead long ago.

Most young people dip their fingers into something risky at one time or another – most can then just walk away when the novelty wears off – but not if it’s meth – that’s just a commitment to slow suicide. Not even heroin will do to a person what meth does.

  5. I can still feel sorry for people, even when the decisions that screwed up their lives were their own. People screw up. People make bad decisions. People know better but still do stuff that annihilate their whole life. I can still feel bad for them.

  6. Crispy,
I agree with you. Even the worst kind of people have something good about them. It’s a shame that they had to go and do something so stupid or evil that it wipes away the good side. I even feel sorry for mass murderers. Of course also for their families and friends.

  7. If you’re going to do something that stupid, you have to understand the consequences. I broke up with a guy because he got into drugs. I seen friends get arrested, and had a friend kill himself because of drugs. I don’t feel sorry for them, I wish they had thought a little more about what they were getting into.

You HAVE to know what a bad idea it is. That’s part of why it’s illegal.

  8. Me too Cripsy!

And Kate, I understand what you’re saying, and given your experiences, I can see why you have such a strong stance against those who do drugs. But I think people get into drugs for so many different reasons. I work in Addictions research, and so many of the people I deal with have reached a point where things are so miserable for them that they can’t understand the consequences, they can’t think clearly enough to do as you say and think about what they are getting into. When you are in a position that you don’t feel the amount of pain people are in, or are fortunate enough to have supports and strength to maintain perspective, it’s hard to see it as anything other than a stupid choice. With the clients I see, even though many of them still see the drugs they use as the only happy point in their day, there isn’t a single one who doesn’t want out of it.

  9. Interesting comments.

    Crispy +1

and Kate… similiar case here. I don’t even know where the ex is now.
