The other side of the world

Bitsy, You got a boat?

If I dug a hole straight through the earth from my house I’d end up in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Australia.

In geography, the antipodes of any place on Earth is its antipodal point; that is, the region on the Earth’s surface which is diametrically opposite to it. Two points which are antipodal to one another are connected by a straight line through the center of the Earth. Full article at Wikipedia.

  1. DAYUM. Seems like most everywhere comes up in the Indian or Pacific Oceans. Gives me a real sense of how much ocean there is out there.

  2. Pretty much, Richard. The US of A seems to fit quite nicely in the India Ocean as it does the Atlantic.

If we East coast people hit water it stands to reason Jon would, and most of the others too.

  3. Mike, this is a great plan, digging that bigass hole. This is the confusing part though, if we survive digging through the core and reach the Indian ocean, will it still be called down under or up over, you guys have me confused.

    • I am a little concerned when I reach the bottom on the Indian Ocean. What happens then? Will the rush of water into the hole flush me back up to St. Louis?

  4. I am disappointed to find out, unless you live in Argentina, you can’t dig a hole to China. My parents lied to me!

  5. Jonco…with the Indian Ocean coming in at one side, and the Mississippi flooding at the other side, you might be stuck in the center for awhile.
We’re gonna need a bigger plunger.
