An underwater volcano has erupted Friday close to the Tonga coast, in the South Pacific ocean.
Scientists sailed to inspect the the volcano, which has been shooting smoke, steam and ash into the air near the low-lying twin volcanic islands of Hunga Tonga and Hunga Ha’apai.
A Tsunami warning had been issued but was later cancelled.
Tonga is east of Australia and southwest of Hawaii.
I’vew got dibs on the real estate listing for the new beachfront.
Darn it! We MUST ban these things! The greenhouse gas emissions are completely off the charts!
Volcano emissions have nothing on all our industries and cars.
Also on The Big Picture.
That is crazy!
I always get nervous when seismic activity happens out this way… something about tsunamis, open ocean, and isolated islands do that to me.
/Alooooooha!
We’ve had two earthquakes here in the past two weeks. Shake, rattle n roll!
