2008, the year in photographs

The Big Picture has some absolutely amazing pictures.  They have put together a selection of the year’s best.

Absolutely amazing stuff here.  Some pictures might not be suitable for everyone.  Here are a few examples:

Ship
Locals and tourists walk around the Dutch ship Artemis which ran aground on the beach of les Sables d’Olonne, southern French Britanny, western France, March 10, 2008. The boat had been driven onto the coast by the wind blowing more than 130 km per hour. (REUTERS/Stephane Mahe)

Enc09_approach
This sequence of 12 frames was taken by NASA’s Cassini spacecraft over a span of about 45 minutes on March 12, 2008. In that brief time, Cassini covered almost 40,000 kilometers in its approach to a flyby encounter with Enceladus, one of the moons of Saturn. The overexposure and smearing of the images gives a hint of the raw speed involved – 14.4 km/sec (or 32,211 mph). Shortly after this sequence, at its closest, Cassini approached within 52 km (32.3 miles) of the surface of Enceladus. (NASA/JPL-Caltech)

Donkey
Pakistani men try to rescue a donkey buried during an earthquake in Ziarat, about 130 kilometers (81 miles) south of Quetta, Pakistan on October 30th, 2008. Rescue workers searched through the rubble of villages destroyed by a powerful earthquake in southwestern Pakistan that killed at least 215 people. (AP Photo/Emilio Morenatti/FILE)

  1. The donkey didn’t make it?! OMG poor donkey! Donkeys are great, I’ve always wanted a donkey. Poor thing, at least they tried to get it out, usually people are such bastards. One of my fighters had a second stroke and isn’t doing well, I’m just a little emotional when it comes to animals at the moment.

    *cries for donkey* Stupid world!

  2. Ana I have a mini donkey,I may send in a pic,yea it is sad but its not a good sign when theres dirt in its eyes and mouth but at least they did try, babe that doesnt make the world stupid,DAYUM!! fish can have strokes?I didnt know that, I hope he/she will be ok

  3. I hope your fishy is OK, Ana. My poor puppies can hardly go outside right now because it’s almost like it burns their paws because it is so cold. God bless all our pets!! I’d be lost without mine.

  4. He had a strange fit today and the rest of the time he is lying down and sleeping. He’s eating, but it takes a long time cause he can’t swallow properly. It’s so sad, he is quite young, but has always been a little strange, I think his head took a hit before I bought him.

The water he was kept in was acid. I wish I could’ve saved all the poor fishies but you can only have one fighter per tank. I took three and regrettably left his twin behind 🙁

    I <3 fish

  5. Man, some of these photos remind me of how fortunate I am to be living in a country like the USA. Sure, we have our problems, but nothing like what some other people are going through.
