Rub Vicks VapoRub on your feet to stop a cough

I got this in an email today.  I checked and Snopes.com can neither confirm nor deny that it works.  So take it for what it’s worth.  It might be worth trying.

Vicks_VapoRub During a lecture  on Essential Oils, they told us how the foot soles can absorb  oils. Their example: Put garlic on your feet and within 20  minutes you can ‘taste’ it.

Some of us have used Vicks VapoRub for years for everything from chapped lips to sore  toes and many body parts in between. But I’ve never heard of  this. And don’t laugh, it works 100% of the time, although the scientists who discovered it aren’t sure why. To stop night  time coughing in a child (or adult as we found out  personally), put Vicks VapoRub generously on the bottom of  the feet at bedtime, then cover with socks. Even persistent,  heavy, deep coughing will stop in about 5 minutes and stay  stopped for many, many hours of relief. Works 100% of the time  and is more effective in children than even very strong  prescription cough medicines. In addition it is extremely  soothing and comforting and they will sleep soundly.

Just happened to tune in A.M. Radio and picked up this  guy talking about why cough medicines in kids often do more  harm than good, due to the chemical makeup of these strong  drugs so, I listened. It was a surprise finding and found to  be more effective than prescribed medicines for children at bedtime, in addition to have a soothing and calming effect on sick children who then went on to sleep soundly.

My  wife tried it on herself when she had a very deep constant and  persistent cough a few weeks ago and it worked 100%! She said that it felt like a warm blanket had enveloped her, coughing  stopped in a few minutes and believe me, this was a deep, (incredibly annoying!) every few seconds uncontrollable cough,  and she slept cough-free for hours every night that she used  it.

If you have grandchildren, pass this on. If you  end up sick, try it yourself and you will be absolutely amazed  at how it works.

Thanks Joe P

  1. I’ve heard about this before, and we’ve tried it with our kids due to the issues with cough medicine for children. Does seem to help.

The other thing that I’ve had great success with is chocolate. Recent studies show it can be as effective as the cough suppressant, dextrothomorphan hydrobromide (sp?). Let a square of chocolate dissolve in your mouth and it works better than most cough medicines.

  2. A square of chocolate?…hmmm…I see a square two-layered chocolate cake with chocolate icing sitting right there in my kitchen…
I think I feel a cough coming on later tonite…

  3. if apply vaporub to the bottom of your feet doesn’t work, you can apply it to your nether regions. i guarantee that you’ll completely forget about your coughing.

  4. This works and doesn’t work, it depends on your feet.

It’s more effective in children because their feet are softer and more receptive. It worked for me, personally, as a child when I had bad asthma problems and couldn’t sleep well.

However, it no longer works for me. When I asked my doctor about it, he pointed out my very calloused (7 years of track & field!) feet and the fact that my feet can longer absorb the Vics like they used to, so it’s back to the old chest rub down again.

  5. I was an interested skeptic when I first heard about the apply-Vics-to-feet suggestions. I’m plagued by a persistent dry, picky little cough which may or may not be a slight allergic reaction to medication I’ve been prescribed in the last several months. It’s extremely annoying, because it attacks my windpipe like someone tossed thumbtacks down there and I’m trying to swallow over them — not likely to calm down quickly. I’ve used Vics as a chest rub for decades and been very grateful for its aromatic temporary help, but never had deep alleviation of coughing, let alone bronchitis when that set in. Last week I tried the evening foot rub for the first time — I slept through the entire night without a cough, woke up to my alarm as usual, hit the bathroom for morning ablutions and immediately coughed up a concentrated knot of phlegm. Since then, I’m still having fun and games during the day with cough attacks in throat and down into chest off and on, but they are noticeably less intrusive (or lengthy) and each night I’ve put the Vics on my feet I have slept through the night without waking. I’m as surprised as anybody else over the complete success of this “new wives tale.” Hope it helps equally well for others. (P.S. When I rise in the morning after applying Vics the night before, my feet are clean and smooth, with no vestige of greasiness anywhere.)

  6. I have had a deep persistent cough for three months with an ER visit with ART (aresol breathing treatment), IV Solu-medrol, chest xray, oral prednisone, etc.

I had totally forgotten about Vics Vapor rub since I do not have children. A coworker, who has 12 children, told me about applying the rub on my feet. I bought the rub after work and worked out.at the gym. Yes, I put the rub on my feet during that time and noticed I did not cough as much during my workout. I then went home, showered, and then again applied (Vics Vapor Rub CREAM-higher percentage of medication versus the original rub) and slept through the night without coughing (however, I also continued to take my night dose of cough med…so I thought I’d continue my trial). During the next morning and throughout my workday, I applied the Vics cream which worked wonders!

I wanted to make sure that it did not have a placebo effect on me, so I had my my coworkers pay attention to whether or not it made a difference. They noticed it made a significant difference….no coughing at all!

I work as a Nurse Practitioner in Pain Management; however I am nationally board certified in Family Practice and would recommend this treatment for the use of adults and children. I would use the cream for adults and baby vics rub for children.

PS…FYI, yes, I have an appointment with my provider for follow-up and will discuss my treatment.

    Sincerely,

    Jennifer K. MSN, FNP-C

  7. My daughter just put the vicks on both feet ( she’s 17 yrs old), I will write again in the morning to let you know how it works.
    God Bless

  8. Well, she did not get the help from it like I thought she would, however I think she already has infection in her chest and sinuses, so I can see how it might not work for all of that. She said she felt a little better. I would try it again, but not wait until it moves to the chest for several days.

    Thanks
