Here’s the picture I posted yesterday with the Brains for 25 cents.
After some discussion here and with friends I decided to try and find the location. The closest I could come was the intersection of Chouteau and Grand Avenues in St. Louis.
This is now the location of St. Louis University. Brains are much more expensive there nowadays. I’m not sure that this is where the cheap brains were, but it’s got to be close. I scoured the neighborhood and this is the best I could find.
Update:
Here’s a picture D from California found. It has a little different view and shows the street signs.
Here is a satellite view of the corner as it is now.
In the picture I took today (second picture above) from the corner of Grand and Chouteau, you can see the Life Care Center building in the next block on the right hand side.
Thanks to all who contributed.
I’m a california reader.
This image seems to be quite famous. Images are available at http://art.cafepress.com/item/brains-25-cents-framed-panel-print/19955691.
After looking for similar images, I came across this one:
I then looked up USONA MFG. Co and come up with an address: 3512 Chouteau Ave. Google mapping the address, that is the corner of Carr Lane Ave and Chouteau Ave.
Carr Lane is one block east from where I took the picture today (Chouteau and Grand). I don’t believe there was anything there when I drove past today. I may try again tomorrow after work.
Thanks D, for all your efforts.
This is fascinating…I’m in Ohio, but I went to Windows Virtual Earth 3D, and typed in the address D found…3512 Chouteau Ave. It appears to be a 4 or 5 story dark red brick bldg. It doesn’t look very old. (Condo or apt? Medical bldg?). The old ‘Brains’ shop would now be a small parking lot partially hidden from the road by trees, with a covered carport with green roof.
I don’t know if this will work, but here is a link to the street view on the map:

(Jonco – if that link doesn’t show up properly, I’ll email you with it.)
The link sorta worked, but I guess you have to type the street address into the search box yourself. It should be right there at the top of the page…
If anybody else knows how to do this, feel free to jump in here…
I remember now that my brother and I submitted a version of this picture to National Lampoon magazine back in the early mid 70’s
It’s a Life Care Center:

Where zombies now go to “un-die?”
WOW, You guys are amazing. I found virtually the same view using Google Maps: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=38.625203,-90.234768&spn=0.001465,0.001794&t=h&z=19I guess there’s no need to go by there any more. Thanks everyone!
Geez Jon, I noticed the Arch in the background of the pic in your first post and sorta pointed out it was St. Louis. I didn’t intend for you to make it a field trip and research project. But good work, you deserve an A+… and a cookie… or a bag of brains.
