Blow a hair dryer all around the outside. They come right apart. (Unless you put the buckets that way without washing the paint out of the outside bucket and left it there since last summer, in which case it’s all one bucket now.)
If you keep the buckets stacked and sitting on the ground (vertically), use both hands to lift the top bucket–using equal pressure and be slow.
