And made all the longer when there are ticketing issues — like for some reason, the airline where the ticket was purchased doesn’t forward the wheelchair information (which was entered on the outgoing trip 2 weeks prior) to it’s codeshare partner, who then won’t allow you to board because the Captain doesn’t want to accept the chair if it hasn’t been confirmed (even though it’s confirmed on your second flight of the day!) and that desk doesn’t open until 7am, when your flight is scheduled for 5:50am, so they move you to the 9:05 flight, but then forget to issue the ticket when they do that, so you end up racing to the gate despite having been at the airport 3 hours ahead of your original flight and six hours ahead of the rescheduled one — and your connection that was supposed to have four and a half hours to make was cut to one and a half and you are racing to make THAT.
There’s much more to this story, but I was awake for 36 hours, then slept 8 and am back at work already first thing this morning. Mike crashed out around midnight (early for him!), and will probably be recovering for most of today. We did make it home on our originally scheduled flight, but all in all, I was awake for the better part of 36 hours (slept about 45 minutes on the plane) and Mike was closer to 24 hours, and with the stress of the day, we just need some rest.
I am happy to report that all 16 bottles of alcohol made it home safely, as did our fancy basket (hamper for those of you in the UK) that was given to us by great friends.
We’ll be back to your regularly scheduled comedic relief later on.

I love a good stroopwaffel !
Sleep well. Get oriented.
We’ll wait.
I’m glad you got home safely after all the airline bullshit. I’ve had very few flights that went smoothly with no delays so can totally relate. Got left behind on an otherwise empty plane in Hamilton, Ontario years ago when the flight attendants who were supposed to help us exit down the metal stair – outdoors in December during an ice storm – forgot about us. We’ll be able to laugh about that some day, I’m sure. Glad you still have your sense of humour too after all that stress. Sleep well, and more power to ya.
I am glad you two made it back safely (despite the issues) and hope the vacation was great.
I hope the need for a wheelchair is temporary for the one of you who needed it.
That’d be me. degenerative spinal damage from a lifetime’s worth of career hours achieved in only 20 years. As such, I have a personal electric mobility chair to assist in the longer hauls that I can’t accomplish via biped
Over achiever.
Sorry to hear that. I am not sure if anything can be done, but I hope some medical person figures out a way to fix your spine.
better living through chemistry, my friend
Exactly–me, too. For decades and decades.
Reminds me of twenty plus years ago when my sister-in-law in Florida sent my wheelchair using father-in-law up to us for two weeks. Paid for the chair extra service since he couldn’t handle much himself.. When he went back we used a flight from Flint Mi. down to Detroit Metro to fly him back home.
Since I had to take the day off to do this after his flight took off we took a hundred plus mile ride further north to the Casino. Turns out when he got to Metro the flight was canceled due to Florida weather. They were really mad that we didn’t stay home (No cell phone back then) waiting for such a cancellation. Finally they got a hold of my brother-in law and his wife picked him up. So why didn’t they know the weather for the whole trip to the final destination? It’s just a matter of hours.
