      Actually, that phrase came from typesetting. The letters were backwards so when they were covered in ink and hit the paper, the letters would be correct for the reader. This meant that the letters “p” and “q” were easy to confuse when setting the letters to print.

  1. I know, Tim. Way back when I started work I got a job at a printing works, and helped make up the rows of type for adverts. The Company had a Linotype machine but some of the fonts the advertisers wanted were not available for the machine.

    The job lasted just over a week, when I went to work one morning the building was a pile of smouldering rubble. A fire had started in an adjacent building and as both were mainly timber it had spread rapidly.
