this past weekend, and as we were driving toward a scenic overlook in Ellijay we actually saw a black bear on the side of the road in the tall grass. Sadly, none of us took pictures

Rockalilly -that’s great you did the run. Did you win?
I could do a 5k run–if I can use a motorized vehicle.
Honestly, it was hot, hilly, and it had stormed the night before – so the grass was slippery and there was a lot of mud. It was a 2-lap course, so I tapped out after the first lap. I still got my participation medal and my glass of wine, though – so that was the important part! And I’m slower than a turtle in peanut butter on a good day, so winning was never the goal. 🙂
In hindsight, I’m glad I stopped when I did because my knee has been bothering me since then, so I may have twisted it weird somewhere along the way.
i was in ellijay just last saturday; needed some hard cider from the Reese place; stopped by “fainting goats” vineyards on the way back too… I did not even think about doing a 5k run: If I HAD thoughts like that I would have gone straight to the psych ward and checked myself in…
We may have just missed you, Keith! We stopped at Reece to swap out some growlers after lunch! And the 5k was at Engleheim. More expensive than we typically go for, and I didn’t love my sample – so didn’t buy anything there. We did also go to House of Applejay Distillery, which I highly recommend.
I’ve been to Engelheim; wasn’t thrilled – I prefer Cartecay and Chateau Meichtry (better vineyards around Ellijay). Never been to House of Applejay; did it just open? there were signs for it all over the place and I don’t recall seeing it on prior visits… didn’t stop there but will visit next time I’m up there.
I’ve been to Moonrise and R.M. Rose (both in Rabun County) and a bunch of vineyards. I actually don’t drink much but I love the views and just relaxing and checking out the vineyards. My favorites (in Georgia) include Fainting Goats (not far from Ellijay) which has a pretty epic view from the tasting room; it’s up on a ridge at “Burnt Mountain” along GA136; the goats are fun and the wine is excellent. Montaluce is another vineyard with amazing views; it is up near the headwaters of the Elijay river (northeast of Dahlonega) overlooking the rolling foothills to the south. I tend to be in Northeast Georgia a lot more often; Kaya, Three Sisters, Terra Incognita and Yonah Mtn Vineyards are frequent stops. (Jumping Goats Roasters – a Coffee shop has a wonderful view of Mount Yonah from their cleveland location (kinda hidden up the hill across the hwy from Yonah Burgers) – they have a pavillion with a view of the rock climbing side of Yonah across several farms)
oops – that new distillery was “White Path Creek” distillery; House of Applejay has been around a while (have never been; but the one with all the signs is north of town on the road towards Blue Ridge)…
There used to be an AWESOME winery near Helen called Sautee Nacoochee, but we found a suitable alternative with Crane Creek. We also love Cavender Creek and their Donkey themed wines, and their sister winery does an awesome cranberry wine. Monteluce now has an italian restaurant next to it and does a decent Pizza.
crane creek has an excellent restaurant at the south end of the vineyards “paris and company” – it is only open for dinner on weekends but it is really good. separate entrance from the tasting room for the vineyards.
Terra Incognito is near the top of a mountain; kinda hard to find but that vineyard is at the headwaters of the creek that forms Minnehaha falls and flows into lake rabun. We’re going to explore some of the farms and vineyards in the northwest end of South Carolina in July.
Cats Paw is fantastic in SC, and near the GA/SC border is Southern Origin Meadery…which is amazing if you like mead.
I swear I don’t have a drinking problem. You all have “met” my husband. It’s a requirement of the job. 🤣
I swing by Monks Mead and Tesnatee River Meadery a lot; (I have been out to the Monks Meadery in Athens but that’s the manufacturing lot and they aren’t really setup for direct sales there; however they do have a tasting room down off Highland Avenue in VaHi)
Tesnatee River/Allisons Honey is right down the road from Kaya, 3 Sisters, Frogtown, Dahlonega Resort and Vinyard and Cavender Creek.
Cat’s Paw apparently closed 2 weeks ago; at least according to google maps; they sold the operation to a company out near the big pink butt of Gaffney (120 South Cherokee Road, Blacksburg, SC???)
Here’s hoping they keep the original recipes and pricing ($21/bottle)
