I hated fund raising as a kid. I don’t generally buy any fund-raising stuff because its overpriced garbage and the group selling the garbage makes next to nothing from the sales.
School fundraising is pretty much the same as tipping waiters: as long as you tip, there’s no reason for the employer to pay a living wage. As long as the schools guilt you into buying the crap they make the kids peddle, they don’t have to improve the classroom budget or budget for extra curricular activities like art, music, sports, or clubs.
This buyout option is still making it a “requirement” to give them money.
As a former PTO president – I appreciate the options, and wish I would’ve thought about offering those also. I know about half of the parents wouldn’t have been able to donate cash, but were more than happy to show up if called to help. A select few would’ve just given the $50 to forget their names. Which is unfortunately how they treated their kids too – here’s $50 bucks kid – now leave me alone.
