I went to see Avatar last night. The 3–D was pretty amazing. I just can’t imaging how some guy (James Cameron) can come up with the idea, much less the ability to create this marterpiece of cinema, and make it come across as somehow believable. It reminded me a lot of Jurassic Park in a way. The special effect are just outstanding.
On a side note I ran across this interesting 3–D glasses effect:
Take a pair of 3–D glasses and put them on and look into a mirror. Close one eye and then the other. Prettin interesting effect you get there.
This photo simulates the effect, but it works better in person.
“It reminded me a lot of Jurassic Park in a way”
Allot of the sounds were taken from Jurassic park.
The sounds of the big horses is from the Rapters when they communicate to each other.
The sound the big black Panther cat thing makes is from the T-Rex when it screams.
I had no idea they used sound from one film in another. Isn’t there a copyright violation or something?
I know they use the Wilhelm Scream (video) in movies but that’s about all I knew about.
It’s just a shame that while he waited those decades for the technology to catch up to his brainstorm masterpiece of an idea, he didn’t have the time to write deep, memorable characters, or a story that wasn’t a rip-off of dances with wolves/Pocahantas. If something is going to revolutionize the movie industry, I sure as hell hope it won’t be a Disney ripoff.
How is this a masterpiece of an idea? It’s the story of “Pocahontas” that’s tweaked, that’s all…
The sound designer on Avatar was the assistant sound designer on Jurassic Park, so he probably has many of those sounds in a library. BTW, I too saw Avatar last night — very impressive! The visuals were flawless!
I wholeheartedly agree with JD and Jarrod. The visuals were outstanding but its no substitute for a film with some depth or characters. As has always been the way with special effects, they’re at their best when they’re not overwhelming the rest of the film.I couldnt help but feel cheated
Cameron didn’t come up with anything. He just spent a very large pile of money to bring together a bunch of other people’s ideas, some of which (including that kind of 3D) have been around for decades. There’s genius in how he did that.
As for story, who goes to a Cameron movie expecting deep characterization or insightful plots? I mean, really. Cameron makes eye candy.
FREAKY
I JUST discovered that trick with the glasses myself yesterday, and now you post it here.
