We used to do this when I was a kid, using our sleds hooked onto the back bumper of passing cars. Of course, the drivers did not realize that they had hitchhikers.
we called this “skeeching” in upstate new york as kids. hitch a ride without the driving knowing. I think they even had a special fine for it if you got caught.

We had a snow deluge this weekend and I saw this a couple times on my street next to the Chesapeake Bay.
