I am somewhat surprised that airline flights would be allowed that close to a launch.

I think from how far away the plane was and how fast the shuttle moves that It would of been quite something if that plane could of reached / interfered with the shuttle.
says 1 minute into launch the shuttle is doing about 1000MPH and at 2 minutes 3000MPH
Yeah, but what happens if the shuttle veers off course towards the airliner?
Richard – I think the FAA says to fasten you seat belt, put your traytable up, put your head down between your legs as far as you can, and kiss your arse goodbye.
