  1. That reminds me of the old joke about the ship captain with a reputation as an incredibly capable shiphandler, who was on his last voyage before retiring. Each time he left port or came into port, he would take a small piece of paper from his shirt pocket, read it, and tuck it back into the pocket before issuing the commands to the helm and the rest of the crew. Everyone who had ever served with him wanted to what secret knowledge was written on the paper, but he would never tell anyone what it was.

On this occasion, after reading the paper, he started to tuck it back into his pocket, then smiled, crumpled the paper and tossed it into the trash. At the end of another superb effort bringing the ship to dock, he thanked everyone and left the bridge to collect his belongings. After giving him a moment to get out of earshot, there was a scramble to get to the wastebasket. The ship’s officer who grabbed the paper found the following written on it:

Left = Port, Right = Starboard.

  2. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen a documentary on this place. It’s in India and it’s a scrapping yard. They run the boats up onto the shore and the teams then dismantle them. All the ships coming in do the same thing.

  3. Judging by the flag, this is Mauritius, an island nation in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Judging by the shiphandling, this is South Florida.

  4. Like Bob said, they are purposely running these ships ashore. A couple years ago, they had a special on 60 Minutes or some other show like that showing this massive operation in Africa, I believe, where they would do this on a large scale. Crews go in and dismantle the ships for profit.
