Driver’s blood alcohol content was 9 times legal limt

Drunk-drivingSouth Dakota authorities say drives BAC was .708
RAPID CITY, S.D. — South Dakota authorities say a woman found passed out in a stolen delivery van earlier this month registered a blood alcohol content of .708 — nearly nine times the legal limit and a possible record for the state.

Meade County State’s Attorney Jesse Sondreal said Wednesday that 45-year-old Marguerite Engle was found slumped over the van’s steering wheel along a highway on Dec. 1.

He says the highest blood alcohol content state chemists he spoke with could recall was a .56. The state’s legal limit is .08.

Authorities say Engle missed an initial court hearing Dec. 15, but that they found her Monday in another stolen vehicle, and that she had been drinking.

She was being held on two counts of driving under the influence. It wasn’t immediately clear if she was facing other charges.

Her attorney declined comment.

  1. i agree with grog….i thought the lethal level was .40. thou i just did some googleling and it says alkis can have higher levels as their tolerance builds up. scary to think 70% of your blood would be booze :/

I’m sure they were thinking “FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

  3. @hbshrimp, .70 BAC does not equal 70% alcohol in blood. BAC doesn’t work that way. Even if we took it literally, .70 is less than 1% alcohol in the blood stream. It’s actually some weird formula.

    1 percent BAC by volume = 1/100 (%) g/mL = 1 cg/mL or 9.43 mg/g, 217.4 mmol/L

I actually just had a friend admitted to a hospital cause she went off the deep end. Her BAC was .46 measured by blood at the hospital about an hour after she had her last drink. And yes, 50% of people would be dead at that level. And like how someone mentioned above, alcoholics who build up to that level fare better than the average person who just binged one night. My friend was still somewhat conscious at the time being that she was able to make phone calls, but she had thrown up all over herself at that point and the police had to physically restrain her.

  4. Richard – Well, let me tell you something; I knew Richard. I drank beer with Richard. I saw what Richard could do to a few hundred buffalo wings. Richard was a friend of mine and Richard, . . . . You’re no Richard!

  5. I was going to say that her license should be taken away, but I don’t think that will help keep this idiot off the road.

They should lock her up and have her attend AA meetings.
